I've grown a number of different lamiums and none have proven to be thuggish or overly aggressive in my garden. Although I will say my garden tended to be more dry shade than moist shade. My favorite cultivar is 'Anne Greenaway' for the gorgeous foliage color. Mixes beautifully with hostas, dicentra and ferns.

A thug in your garden and everywhere else it grows!! The common yellow flowered one is NOT a lamium. It is Lamiastrum galeobdolon, aka yellow archangel, and is a noxious weed in this state. yellow archangel

True lamiums are generally very well behaved. They are sometimes sold as groundcovers, so they DO spread but never rampantly and are easily controlled.

Lamiastrum galeobdolon is the worst weed I've ever encountered. Seeds germinate at least five years in the ground. It will spread even under established areas of salmon berry where nothing else grows!
I've spent a lot of money trying to control it.
