Lotto Blocks

It was raining tonight, so I attempted May and June (I'm skipping April, since I don't have any pastel fabric). The colors look better in person, especially June (kelly green and orange). I'm a true beginner (these lotto blocks are my first blocks ever). And I'm finding them to be very good practice. The June block was a challenge. Those hst's are wonky and all those points show off your mistakes!!! Definitely learning a lot. I know the rule is to iron to the dark side, but sometimes that's not always possible. Correct? I've been pressing to one side and nestling my seams when sewing the rows together. I feel that nestling the seams is more important. So for me, the rule is "always nestle and, if/when possible, press to the dark side". At this stage, I don't press open my seams, nor do I snip any of my seams (except for the dogtails on the hst's). But maybe I should be?! I do find myself looking at the backside of the blocks more than the fronts (and wondering if they look right). Anyway, when Toolgranny gets them, she can look them over and make sure they are good enough for the lottery.

those sure are nice, J. my april blocks are still in pieces - hope to get at them soon....and then, I'll have to go find the colors for May and June!! LOL Glad you are doing the lotto! It's a great way to learn, and everyone has always been very, very helpful. Welcome!

Welcome. We love to meet new quilters here. Be sure you match the block colors given in Sue's post as they have to all fit together into one quilt for the winner. On my computer they look like black which isn't a color of the rainbow but that is probably just my monitor. And, you can always send them to me whenever they are done. You don't have to wait for the actual month. I already have May and June from several people who work ahead.

I stated in my message that the color was green. Sorry the photo was confusing. I'll request that it be deleted.

Jennifer, everyone's monitors are different, so don't worry about deleting photos, etc. I see green and navy in your blocks.

I think your blocks look great! The Lotto is a wonderful way to try new blocks and get some practice. As for ironing, it sounds like you're doing fine. Try to press to the dark, but sometimes that just doesn't work. Quilters generally don't press seams open at all, unless there's a tremendous amount of bulk like at the center of pinwheels where a lot of seams come together.

Be sure to ask questions...everyone here is very good at answers!

Jennifer, Congrats on joining the lotto! It sounds like you are doing a great job of getting the seams to lay flat - and like Jen said, it doesn't always work to press to the dark side. It looks like you did a good job. We look forward to having you participate in more months! Like Linda said, you can send the blocks to her whenever you get them finished. Near the end of April I will put the post up for the May Lotto.

    Hi Jennifer.

Your blocks look great. Please don't delete the pics...we love pictures!

I still haven't tried the lotto. I do make some of the lotto blocks just for practice.

The members here are always glad to answer questions and help you.

    TFS.

As another newbie, I think you've done a great job with your first batch. I too tend to overthink every seam, press, and back appearance. The lotto is great fun with a very helpful bunch of quilters. I've learned so much in the short time I've been a member. Enjoy and keep stitchin'!
