Need help with replacing dead plants, what new plants to purchase

My house is about 10 years old and it's time to re do some of the landscaping. Several things died over this past winter. I'm not changing all of it, just replacing the dead plants and changing out a few plants that I don't like. The sun rises in the back of the house and sets in the front.

The first photo is how it looked a few years ago.

This center island piece here really needs help. I'm removing everything except the two green bushes. New paper and additional rock will be put down, but what else to plan I don't know?

This center island gets lots of sun, so something that does will in sun.

Lots of things died on the left side of the house. This area gets more shade with the big tree above it. The mostly dead tree is being removed on the corner of the house. The two sad looking things under each window are being removed, I'm also removing the little grassy things in front of the flood light. Any suggestions on what to plant here?

You need to post more photos. It looks like maybe you could take out the grass growing in the bed next to the house on right side. A lot of people dislike 'meatball' shrubs but they don't bother me. I am not a fan of the center island. I would remove it and have grass there. Yes, I see there is a light there but it could be mowed around. Do you know the names of any of the plants? What USDA zone are you in?
