How did you attach your string lights to the wood beams?

I have a pergola and can't decide how to hang vintage string lights. Just along the outside beams, a big X, or zig zag.

Hi! Although we cannot speak for this photo, there are many different ways to hang patio lights. Screw-in hooks work well for hanging patio lights across wood beams. We have also seen eye bolts and quick links used for wooden surfaces.
