Cabinet Pulls-So Confused!

I am trying to choose pulls for our new kitchen. Reno will begin within the next few weeks. I am so confused about finishes! We will be getting stainless appliances. Should I get stainless pulls or nickel pulls? What is the difference in the way they look?

Also, what size pull should I get? I will using pulls on the lower drawers and the upper cabinets.

The upper cabinet sizes are:

2-36"

1-30"

2-17"

1-35"

1-33" above fridge

The lower drawers are:

1-36" stack

2-21" stacks

1-24" stack

Thanks in advance for your support!

You can buy a model of handle that comes in different widths. I suggest mocking up lengths using aluminum foil and then seeing how the size works on your cabinets and drawers. As far as what to buy....good luck! There are thousands! It would make it easier on you if you had a general idea of style and then go from there. I think you should find a pull you love and then worry about the finish.

    Anyone have any thoughts???

I chose a mixture. Not installed yet, so no pics. Drawer pulls are all the same size (centers 160mm) -- but double pulls on drawers that are 27" +. Smaller pulls (centers 128mm) on large cabinet doors. Knobs on the shorty cabinets. (& lower cabinet doors). Cup pulls on top small drawer throughout. I didn't want my pulls changing sizes within the same category - i.e. sized to the drawer size.

I ordered probably two dozen pulls from Lowes and HD, in every size and finish I thought might work. The winners rose to the top pretty quickly. Then I returned them all and bought the one I had chosen. (To my surprise, I went with 160mm everywhere, even on most uppers (some, like above the fridge, are knobs). 160mm sounds so long, but I preferred it to the shorter. You just have o get them in your hand and against your doors, to know what you will.like best.

Thanks for all of your thoughts!

I have already started looking at pulls and see that there is a very big difference in how they feel compared to each other. Unfortunately, I don't have a door yet, to hold them up to.

I guess my two main questions are:

    1. Is there a rule of thumb as to the length of the pull compared to the width of the drawer/cabinet?

    1. What is the difference in the look of stainless pulls compared to nickel pulls? Would the look of nickel pulls work with stainless appliances?

I doubt there is a rule written in stone, but some cabinet people have their own opinions. A search on this pulls up tons of threads.

As for what looks best with what, I think you will need to use your own eyes for that. I mean, in the end it's your kitchen and you should get what looks right/best to you!

IMO stainless steel is like blue jeans. it "matches" everything.

as for what size pull, some people have offered the rule of thirds. I found it most helpful to find pictures of kitchens I liked, then see what size pulls they had. search this forum or houzz and see what you love. if you find a pic but can't determine the size of the pull, try posting here and see if anyone knows or can guess for you.

To add to your confusion - I have antique iron!

Just asking about nickel vs stainless steel doesn't address the different finishes - are you talking about brushed? Polished? In our kitchen, we have:

    • Stainless sinks
    • Brushed stainless drains
    • Stainless appliances
    • Pewter light fixtures
    • Brushed nickel faucets, soap dispensers, and air switch
    • Antique iron drawer pulls & cabinet knobs

In my opinion, they all work very well together.

You say you don't have a door yet. Do you have a sample door? When we decided on our door material, finish, & style, we ordered a sample door - they're smaller than regular cabinet doors - they're the same that as those you see in a kitchen design store/shop.

We then took that sample everywhere with us when we went countertop, hardware, etc. shopping. It was very helpful! I highly recommend a sample door!

I find longer pulls tend to look more modern while shorter tend to look more traditional. What type of feel are you going for? We went to a kitchen supply place and felt a bunch of different pulls to see which one we liked. We then ordered them online and used 6" and 10" pulls depending on the size of the drawer/cabinet, and small knobs for the stacked upper cabinets. Also we have stainless appliances and got the satin nickel hardware- it looks great!!! :-)

I have brushed nickel knobs and stainless faucets. They look the same to me. The finish is very similar.
