Re-glazing old windows

My husband and I are planning to re-glaze our old windows ourselves and are wondering which route to take on the glazing putty. Oil or acrylic based? The videos and info we have watched have used both. We feel that the oil based putty in a can (not the moldable kind that you have to work in your hands first) looks easiest to work with and produces the best looking product. The caulk gun version looks more awkward and the finished product doesn't look as good (it may be the skill sets of the people in the videos causing this disparity, too) However, it appears you must wait a long while before painting. I don't really want to have to wait a terribly long time with tape all over my windows for it to skin over. I do want a lasting and durable end product, though. Suggestions?
