Finding a General Contractor in the Charlotte, NC area

My family is planning a move in about a year to the Charlotte area. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all the GC's there. So many look like they only do multi-million $ luxury homes….I have luxury taste, for sure, but more like a $500k budget. Need some advice from some of you who have been there, done that. Was considering Schumacher, but getting a bad vibe regarding their upgrades/quality. I'd appreciate any info/feedback you have! Really appreciate it.

Have you checked online reviews? Also, sometimes "luxury" contractors also do more modest homes to keep crews busy in off-periods. You might even check with a couple of the high-end builders to see who they would recommend.

Yes, I'm in the process of doing some research online (reviews, etc.). I'm going to start making phone calls next week to find out if they might be willing to take on a project my size. I hadn't thought about them taking on modest projects during their down time - that's encouraging! Thanks for the feedback, sooz001.
