I'm going to share with you some advice from a project I did recently with a very similar style and size. The cottage look of your room dictates that you do a transitional style table with a little bit of heft to it. The manufacturer I suggest is Gat Creek, handmade in West Virginia. The quality is excellent, and they have wonderful finishes. Consider a two tone (top vs base) if the rest of your interior scheme supports it. The room will fit a 64"max diameter table, which they make, but careful consideration of the base leg extension and chair leg interaction is advised. Depending on the chair you select, you can fit 6 comfortably or 8 strategically :)

I am not familiar with Southern Low Country as live in New Zealand, but you have a fabulous space and the kitchen is gorgeous, traditional and is a great foundation for any style. I have searched out a few photos that might help these are, 'my interpretation of this style :)'. One thing I would say is that I would keep the wall colour the same for all the adjoining rooms. You could use a soft white with a hint of blue/grey, if it has some umber in the mix it will be warmer. I can't advise on colours as we don't have the same brands as the US.

The fireplace is lovely and what a great focal point, you can easily lay out your furniture similar to this layout below. If you include a console (not this style), this will make the back of your sofa look more attractive from the back. I would suggest a couple of linen sofas in a neutral 'greige' or soft white (not cream). Then you could incorporate a couple of interesting chairs, maybe wood and upholster combinations with a traditional patterned fabric. I love to look at yard sales or charity shops. I picked up a gorgeous little bamboo side table last week for only $17 I am going to re-paint. Bring in a little black and some accent pieces of pewter or weathered silver to reflect the lovely dining light.

I still think you could use dining chairs such as the ones in the other comment I made, with the slip covers. Alternatively you could use rattan as some have suggested. I have attached a few images for ideas but not sure I understand the Low country style exactly.

Everdebz...lowcountry is a region here in South Carolina. Do a quick search on lowcountry, I think the style is a mix of traditional and coastal.

I vote for round. It is not often that you get a perfectly square (and good sized) dining room. It can fit any shape table unlike most dining rooms, which will accommodate a rectangular or oval table or only a very small square or round. Your room can comfortably fit a 6’ wide round table - unless there is some reason you object, it would be a shame not to go for it! That being said, I am a fan of pedestal tables to maximize perimeter area. With a round table that large, there is lots of room in the middle of the table that a buffet or sideboard isn’t necessary.

I do like the idea of a glass top for the airiness of it. Here is one with a real wood tree base (just finished with a metallic gunmetal type glaze in pic):

Also, there has been much back and forth about you needing a table with a leaf to expand, and I’m wondering (unless I missed it somewhere) how many people you would like for table to fit most of the time? Also, definitely do Sea Salt!

Where can I get this table and chairs?

Since your room is square and your light fixture is round you need to go with a round table. Rectangle would be awkward in a square space with a round light. I love the space with all the windows! Hard to tell you what to do without seeing the style of your other furniture.

What about an L-shaped banquette under the windows with rectangle table and a few comfy arm chairs? Throw a few pillows into the mix and You will have a great space to dine and hang out.

Love the room and view. If you use that lamp, bring a hint of that color in very etheral corner sheers and in a large piece of art on the remaining wall space. Mode lighting sconces, same color as lamp ? I would also paint the walls a shade so that the windows and woodwork stand out. Perhaps a shade of one of the colors you see in the view. Soften the floor with a rug in a neutral color so as not to detract from the view.

Where did you get the light fixture and how much?

I have a square dinning room that is bigger, but I have a round table and it really looks cool. I would highly recommend a big one like that one lady said. You will use it! A small side board somewhere if it would fit would be nice as well to set stuff on it. Wine bottle, dessert, etc. misc.

The light fixture is from Visual Comfort, it retails for around $1300.

Consider a round reclaimed wood top with a pedestal base, add aluminum chairs for contrast, voila!

Unusual room for a dining room....feels like a sun porch. Space is very inspiring though I struggled with light fixture a bit. See what you think.

Try this site. Much better quality, of course, than Exploitation Hardware. They have several designs. Also, there is a cabinetmaker called AWD in Savannah who makes custom furniture...and Black Dog near Charleston also makes nice pieces.

Because this room is so angular, round would add interest and be practical at the same time. The view is spectacular, so play it up as if it's a piece of art.

Bailey510, you have a ton of comments here and some great options and ideas. I'll throw these into the mix. We handbuild these in our shop in Kennebunkport, Maine, and can build any of them in any size you want. They are shown in white oak (Gates and Gates Trestle) and cherry (Willard), but can be built of just about any hardwood. They are all solid hardwood, handcrafted, signed and dated.

That is a great room. Love it! So with the round light and the square room - a round table that turns into an oval with the leaf. Should seat 6 to 8? Instead of painting the ceiling sea salt, paint the table that color and mismatched chairs with floral cushions. I think the white walls and ceiling are totally perfect in your space, so add color elsewhere. I'm seeing peaceful shabby blues, corals, greens and some purple.

Consider a banquette that fills across the back of the space - ballard designs have great components and they will cover them in your choice of fabric. That makes it a lot more useable - people will gravitate toward that seat, and then the chair count can come down - also, you don't need the room to pull chairs away from the table back there, so you have just made the room 2' bigger. If this is to be formal, use velvet and one of the more traditional nailhead stylings.

Either a round or a rectangular table would be terrific with that.

I am not a fan of those with glass tops - with your light fixture, you want to balance it with visual weight below. Some gustavian inspired wood chairs - could be painted in a deep blue green gray and upholstered in the same velvet. . bm stonybrook . . that will connect the metal of the light fixture back to the color palette .

It all depends on your style and how many people you need/want to be able to seat in the room.

You need about 3 feet behind the chairs to allow walk area around the table and a minimum of 4 feet total from the table to allow the chair to be pulled out and someone to sit down at the table.

An oval shape would work well, but if that seems too traditional, try it in glass or go for a rectangle with rounded corners, just for easier passage.

Don't underestimate the power of open shelving or an ettegere' for storage, which is often not as deep as a buffet or sideboard might be.

You could go as eclectic and inexpensive as corrugated metal, shaped into an oval or rectangle shape, strongly supported with a hidden wood frame behind it, for your base and a piece of glass on top of it to a farmhouse table or two - three large garden urns at 29" tall for a base and a glass top or a metal and wood table or natural wood table or use a root base with a glass top (although the latter can get pricey, especially if you choose teak or similar).

It is a lovely room with a great view and wonderful light fixture, so you can go easy on any window treatment...anything from minimalist blinds to gauzy linen to simply left simple and bare.

Gorgeous branches in a large glass vase with river stones at the base would be a nice fit and add some peonies at the base or hydrangeas for a softer look.

Do you entertain a lot? Or is this only for your family? I would suggest an expanding table that converts to a round or square table and possibly use it with a banquette which are really popular and comfortable. This could be used as extra storage, sconces could be placed on either side of the table to add extra lighting or aviance. Good luck.

No we don't do a lot of entertaining although we hope to do a little more when the house is complete. It's mainly just our family of 4 and n laws from time to time!

Glass tables are very cold to the touch & "load" to sounds! Go with wood if you want cozy & warm!

If a glass top, you could have fun with inexpensive placemats..

bailey - what i love about a long banquette and a round pedestal table is that you have created a hang out spot . . . easy to slip in and out . . maybe for yourself with hot tea to watch the kids in the backyard, maybe for your kids to spread out with homework projects while Mom is in the kitchen, you and husband with coffee and newspaper on Saturday morning . . cocktails on Friday night .. ..it feels like a sofa for kids and like a booth for grown ups ..
