The room looks fabulous and, just as you say, needs only some layering to bring it to life. Looking at the bank of interior windows that face the family room. My first thought is shutters to add architectural interest and to break the spaces up somewhat when needed. I think that the green/back/gold that you are working with would benefit by a lovely shot of red. A splash of artwork above the mantle, flower arrnagement, on the coffee table, rectangular pillows on the chairs would all bring the colour in and liven up the space. I would also consider some of centrally located source of light on or over the coffee table - even if just a grouping of large candles. The corners need something - plants would be the obvious or pots of lighted twigs. You can always try some things out and then return them to the store if they don't work for you - have fun!
