Need Advice on Jade Root Development

Hi all! I bought a large jade plant- a large plastic pot with four 'baseball bat thick' trunks. It didn't, at the time, look to healthy. At home I took it out of the pot, and of the 15 inches of potting soil, only a small fraction held any roots, and I couldn't believe the plant was even alive. I cut off several branches and repotted it into a bonsai pot and made it as a forest. It has been growing now for six months, but the individual trunks still seem to rock back and forth more than I would have expected. I had hoped root development would be more rapid, and they would be secure in the pot by now. I have planted them in #2 chicken grit and pine bark fines, maybe 60:40. I am watering about twice/week in my tropicals room under T5 fluorescent grow lights. Should I be concerned that roots haven't developed more?

This is six months ago, strapped into support frame.

This is now, still in the frame for 'bump protection' but no longer strapped in.

So what do you think about root development here?
