It looks like the space to the left of the island is very tight. The goal is to have 42" (3'6") walk space around the island. If those are base cabinets on the far right wall, you might want to reduce the depth so you can shift the island. That way you still have storage and "buffet" space. Keep in mind that won't really be work space.

Move the fridge farther to the right. Where it is now, while convenient, creates a black hole in the corner and reduces usable space to the right of the range. It also makes it difficult to use/get at the space below the counter in the corner. Since you have the space, I'd recommend having the fridge no closer than 3-4 feet to the corner.

If you're concerned about maximizing storage to the right of the fridge, still move it right, then have the wall cabinets on the far right side come to the counter.

Re Mudroom:
it looks like you've got more cabinets and maybe a sink in there. Do you have enough coat storage? I usually figure 24" space per resident - that allows room for backpacks, shoes, and various other clutter.

Also: do you have another powder room in the house? if not, your guests will be going through the mudroom and past your laundry to get to the toilet. If this is the only powder room, you might want to rethink that space.

@Annmarie2 - thanks for this! We're planning to do some shallower cabinets under the window to allow for more room between the island and that wall. I would also like to move the fridge but we're concerned the doors might run into the island. There is another powder room on the main floor. This one will be predominantly for the kids.

Tracy - French-door style fridges work well in this kind of situation. Because there are two doors, neither is much larger than 18", and still leaves plenty of space. And even if you do a more standard door, if you have a 42" clearance, it's unlikely you'll have to worry about bumping.

Love the idea of a 2nd bath for the kids. We have that in our laundry room and, with a 6yo boy, it's a wonderful thing!

Traffic flow for kids tends to be a bit different than traffic flow for adults, and that can often present safety issues. When my kids walk in the house, the first thing they want is a drink, and they head straight to the refrigerator. In this configuration, they'd be heading right through your work triangle, right by the stove to get there. There are a couple of potential fixes for that (including a water cooler or second refrigerator in the mudroom), but when you're still working things out on paper, it's sometimes easier to change the design than it is to change kids!
