My beautiful Redbud 'Merlot" has died in its 4th year in my garden (Canker) - so sad... It is completely underplanted with ivy and many different spring bulbs and I dread going in there and destroying everything to yank out the roots and replace the redbud with the Yellowhorn I have decided on. Any suggestions on how to minimize disruptions to the underplantings would be most appreciated! Redbud trunk is about 3" in diameter - should I just saw/dig out a foot wide trunk perimeter trench, fill with new soil and replant?
