5-1-1 dry wick, moist stick (wick dry, skewer moist)

I'm growing in 5-1-1.

When I test the moisture with a skewer it seems obvious that the bottom few inches of the pot are moderately moist. The wick , which is synthetic chamois, is bone dry.

Is this to be expected or did I do something incorrectly?
