That's the problem with a sectional, they're really hard to arrange in a room. Everyone here is going to try to steer you away from a sectional because a sofa and chairs is so much easier to arrange and rearrange again.

Our first couch, which I am sitting on, is a lazy boy sectional. It has held up fairly well but will soon be retired. We too are opting for the trad. Love seat, chair, couch setup. Our first home had a giant family room and our new house does not.

You should strongly question- I'm not saying Yay or nay- if your room is large enough for a sectional. If you have only one living space in the house you want to marry comfort, function, with aesthetic since it is your main entertaining space past the kitchen.

Two types of people, "TV always on" and "TV on sometimes" when they're in the room. You can immediately tell the difference because "TV sometimes on" people put it in the built ins off to the side of the fireplace, in a corner hutch, etc. The rest right smack in the room. Ask yourself what type of person you are and go from there. Above the fireplace makes the most sense since the fireplace is the center of the room. You could splurge for a framed TV that is a mirror or hidden behind a retractable picture frame. Both are now within price reach of the average consumer.

consider mounting the tv over the FP (simply route the wiring through the wall with a $5 snake from the hardware store), and place the components on a furniture piece flanking the FP. since you are planning to buy furniture, invest in an L-shaped sectional...the back will be facing you as you enter and would continue along the right wall and the L-shape won't block of the room. place a console table, writing desk, low chest of drawers or a cabinet piece along the back of the sofa, and place a great lamp and a few not too small accessories on it. this will offer some lighting to those on the sofa and will soften the look of the back of the sofa as you enter the space nicely. be sure to add large scaled wall art.....art that is too small will not hold its own in a room with a big FP and a big sofa...it will just look like clutter.

I agree with Susan....I think that perhaps a smaller-in-scale sectional and/or one that has 1 longer portion and 1 shorter portion could work in your space with the TV on the solid wall to the right of the fireplace wall. But knowing the specific dimensions will help to determine that.

I too can imagine a sectional "floating" in the room....like toward the bottom left portion of the photo you posted.

Then as Susan indicated, the longer section would be facing the fireplace and then the shorter section would face toward the solid (TV) wall on the right.

Hope this description makes sense. Below are a few examples of sectional styles and sizes I envision in your space.

I can see a small sectional along one side of the room with a credenza 1 & 1/2 times wider than the TV on the opposite side of the room. Place TV on the credenza. Place a narrow console table behind the longest part of the sectional with two lamps & a large rippled glass bowl in the center.

Add a round ottoman at the 'L' of the sectional. Add a large piece of art above the console table. In the corner to the left side of the fireplace add an accent chair angled toward the sectional. Place a large piece of metal art above the fireplace & add a pair of grommet top drapes hung from just under the ceiling down to the floor to just cover the windows. Place a rectangular woven basket on the ottoman for the remotes.
