Slope and steps

What is the slope/grade you are working with here? How did you put the slate in the ground for steps? Thanks.

In all honesty, I don't remember what the grade was in this area but for the most part the whole area was quite steep, some areas we flattened a bit for heavier planting. The stone slabs were set on road base with a layer of sand. They have not shifted much over the years.
