i need a new look

My breezeway needs something I am considering a coastal design, perhaps a bead board style bench with cubbies . Not sure what else I would do with it besides new window treatments. Thanks for any suggestions!

Love the rug you chose. Do you live near a Home goods or Ross? They have cute, large ceramic planters cheap that would look great with a big houseplant in the space.

Vintage Beach, I live by similar stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall's. I could stop by either of those places when I am out in a bit.

Remove window treatments and carpet for sure.
I remembered having this planter right before I went to the store and I think it works well in the space.

You're kicking it, Janet way to go.

Susan 2494, thanks, but only because I have had wonderful advise that it is turning out so well

What's going under the shelves? I think you may be overdoing it, but a photo of the entire area will tell.
Carolyn , the rug should be shipping anytime. That is just the opposite wall and besides the plant posted earlier there isn't anything else in the space except for the bench which was also posted Perviously

Awww, the dog is cute and loving the new space:) Looks So much better! I love the hanging lanterns, they look really nice and welcoming. I would rest the smaller painting on the top shelf and move the larger one to hang where the smaller was. Nice work!

so glad you like it, it has been fun to do. I moved the pictures like suggested. I also like the lanterns staying black

Thanks everyone it is a huge difference from the start and yes even Hunter my 3yr old Lab likes the space. My best friend is stopping over this morning she has no idea I changed anything this should be interesting. Lol
  • 11 years ago
Carolyn, do I need something under my shelve like a bench or a trunk I saw a sea grass one? or just leave it alone so it doesn't get to cluttered

The shelf unit you have on the wall is frequently used over a sink or toilet (hence the holes for a bar at its bottom to hold a towel) and it does look like it needs something under it. Possibly it could go over the bench or elsewhere. But that would mean moving your art around. With items on both walls, you may be creating a situation where the eye does not know where to go...right or left. Let's wait until the rug is there and you can show us the whole room. Then we'll have a better feel for the best look.

sounds good Carolyn I checked this morning says my rug should be delivered Wednesday

You're right on top of things, Janet. Can't wait to hear what you best friend says.

Carolyn, she was very surprised she said I should come help her do her house. She thinks it would be great I would take some design classes. Lol. She is very funny.

Well indeed you did do it yourself, with a little help from your friends! You deserve congratulations and you should feel good about your own abilities. A lot of what we did was just point you in the right direction.

Usually when some one visits my house they leave with ideas to try in their house. I am just follow some really great advise which I really appreciate. I think changing things up is tons of fun.
I think I am finished my rug was delivered and unless I need something like a trunk for additional storage on the opposite wall I think it looks great. Thanks for all of your help ¡

One idea for the wall with the shelf - if the shelf is not sentimental, maybe you could put a vertical mirror on that wall and stack the two pretty paintings (larger one on bottom) beside it.
now I am thinking I do have a round mirror with sea shells around it. I might have to think more about it. hmm
  • 11 years ago

Excellent, Janet. Don't know the size of it, but might move 2 prints to one side of shelf, larger on bottom and hang the mirror on the other side of shelf in the middle. That would make a nice grouping. Or leave the prints where they are and put mirror on opposite side. Doesn't hurt to try.

A coastal design would look lovely in that space! As for the window coverings, you have a lot of options. You can take a look at this coastal style buying guide for some ideas: http://www.selectblinds.com/coastal-window-coverings.html

But bamboo would look fantastic on your windows!

This little mudroom is a great space! what I would do with it is rip out the carpet and try a nice hardwood in there, take down those curtains put a nice new coat of paint, make some nice cubbies and some coat hooks! it would look great! and just keep in mind that this is the first area your guests see so make it look better than it already does!

I would like to see a light color bamboo floor installed. You have a easy install for that area.

I do have left over bamboo from our great room floors when they where installed. hmm

This appears to be a high traffic area. Consider replacing the rug with bamboo flooring or even wood look vinyl -- something much easier to clean.

You have a brick ledge on the right side. You might consider adding a 1"x4" horizontal trim board -- think chair rail - level just under that ledge and under the windows and along the left wall. Before you add the board, mark the line where you'll be putting it and and paint the wall below that line a darker color and the wall above it a lighter shade of the same color.

Repaint the ceiling and the door and door frame and the window frames a really good washable white.

Lose the fabric window treatments; add white mini blinds for both windows and the door.

Would you be able to build a couple of plywood boxes open on the front side and have them facing each other -- and put them on wheels so as to be movable as needed -- and with the top of the box just barely under the new horizontal trim board -- and with the width of the box the width of the glass panes in the windows (not the frames). You could then put your baskets , shoes, etc, in the boxes in a way that's handy but out of sight.

You could either paint the plywood boxes the same color as the bottom half of the wall if you want them to visually disappear or you could stain them for a wood look or go bold and paint them a bright cheerful color of your choosing.

As to furnishings, the tiny lamp doesn't seem to fit; could it and the small rolling barrel be repurposed to a corner of a bedroom needing just a bit of mood light.

Do some shopping at your leisure. Check used furniture stores and/or the Habitat for Humanity Restore Store and/or church sponsored thrift stores in your area and any Good Will and/or Salvation Army stores until you find a tall lamp or a pair of them for atop the boxes.
