Great update. Very fresh looking!

I really the dark gray on the soffit. It makes them recede and it is a nice contrast to the cabinets. I usually see advice on painting them white to match the cabinets (if they are white as well) but like the contrast here.

And the open shelving with the white dishware and yellow accents is fun.

It looks like you got a new floor. What type and how were able to keep the costs below $500?

Well I found the counter top at a store in Ohio that sells damaged ones they cut off the damage and just sell them shorter so each piece was $40. they also sell mistint paint that I pretty much just buy all the time since I repaint every year when I get bored for $10 a gallon, luckily my house is a little less than 700 Sq ft. The floors are floating vinyl plank which I got from home depot for $1.79 a Sq ft. I probably would've picked something lighter if I did it today, but I put it in 4 yrs ago. The travertine I bought from a closeout store for $1.00 a Sq ft and just cut up the glass mosaic for an accent. My kitchen is 11.5x12ft so it's not super big. Lowe's also has a 10% off movers coupon I used to get a discount on the floor and my appliances.

Also I found the light at home Depot on clearance for $50. The bulbs are constantly burning out on it though and it drives me crazy.

Wow, great finds. I think patience here also paid off rather than rushing to buy it all at once.

Do you ever look at Apartment Therapy? Houzz/GW is great (I have been a long-time lurker and only starting posting a few weeks ago), but I like browsing around AT too, particularly for smaller room and DIY ideas.

Yes I love AT and designsponge. Houzz is my go to site to look at things I can't afford. Plus where I live putting a $50,000 kitchen in doesn't make sense since the houses sell for that price.

I think you did an amazing job, this is a great update - love the 50's feel, but it also still feels modern and not just modernized. I would have probably made the mistake of taking down the valance with the shelves, but it adds so much character, nice call keeping it. Good work!

I removed the shelves since I find them cluttery looking, but I love the art deco trim.

Did you cut your tile yourself? Tiling is not nearly as easy or fast as the DIY shows make it appear so I commend you for doing all of this.

Yes I did do all the tile myself. To me that was the easiest part of the whole kitchen, but I have also tiled several other times so I knew what to expect.

Great work! Repainting the cabinets gives the kitchen a really fresh and open feel! Very cool modern lighting as well!

It was floating vinyl plank flooring it is medium rosewood color from homedepot. I put it in my kitchen, living room and down my hall so they would all flow. I also have two small dogs and a cat so it needed to be water resistant which is why I picked it.

Love what you've done, i'm in the midst of an old kitchen budget redo myself and it's nice to see a finished space:) I wanted to unearth my hardwood floors in there but I can see 3 layers of vinyl and other cementish looking layers. I'm excited to see this flooring you used, is it as easy as it looks to install? I think I could remove the top layer of vinyl pretty easily and have a good surface to lay new floor on. Vintage beach: Yes it's really easy to install it took me about 6 hours I would say. If you had a table saw it would be easier, I don't and used a jig saw. They have a newer click version as well that is vinyl but installs like laminate. I had the same issue with my floor having several other floors including asbestos tile under a thin sub floor so I didn't want to mess with it. Ideally I would've loved having the original hardwood, but some battles are left fought by someone else. Haha

What year was your house built? Mine is 1930 and besides a sunroom built on all original. All the old house charm and issues:) I wouldn't know what to do with myself in a new house.

It was technically built in 1912, but was picked up and moved a few lots over onto a new foundation and redone inside in 1948.

The kitchen is about the only thing that remained in the house that gave it charm. I have tried to find things that give homage to the 1940's, but still keep it updated to my taste.

What type of countertop did you put in that you were able to find remnants of? That's a great idea to keep costs down.

The countertop is high definition laminate, I got it from a supply store that buys damaged or not perfect pieces and cuts off the damage.

Star supply in Youngstown ohio. Grossmans bargain outlet is also a great place for just about everything. I just did a flip house kitchen for $4,000 for everything
