First year I grew basil I had a huge harvest. Then last year the pests descended, and completely wrecked my crop. This year I am already seeing holes in the leaves after only 2 weeks. I am determined to fight back more effectively this year, although I have little experience in this area and am trying to figure out the best way to attack it.

I haven't yet been able to catch the critters in the act, so I don't know exactly what I'm up against. I don't *think* it is slugs, but I'll put out some diatomaceous earth as a preventative. I suspect some sort of bugs.

Until I can identify them, would it be reasonable to deploy some general-purpose repellent? Neem oil sounds effective but I don't know if it's a good idea to use on basil. I've heard of using some sort of hot pepper/garlic/soap solution. I don't think a straight soap solution works unless I spray directly on the bugs, right?

Anyway, I'll take any advice I can get on how to deal with this smartly. I don't want to lose my whole crop again...
