i really like it here as this area receives a lot of light and its set up for the wall mounted tv that cannot be moved.

Okay so.... I was very inspired by the loft pictures I featured above. Here are rugs that would replicate that look. Now, you can leave to TV but ditch the couch and the current rug. They look dorm like. This is your first grown up place. Instead go to IKEA and add this table and 4 chairs in the back middle of your room. You also want a really grown up dining area. This will leave to table in between the TV and the fireplace with chairs on the window and doors sides of the room.

Okay. Now to make the TV not look out of place across from a table add this black desk from IKEA underneath and a golden tray to make the space look like a dining buffet area. On either side of the fireplace keep this IKEA chaise flat to the walll to serve as a tiny couch and this chair on the other side of the fireplace for a cheap global accent and extra seating.

Okay bow for the sleeping lofts main pieces. Keep a mattress and box spring on the ground but ditch any headboard. It may look cool but height wise its not. We are going for a modern, global, eclectic vibe. With hints if glamour. Perfect for NYC. Use these IKAT dot sheets and pillowcases from PB teen in black with a plan and cheap white devuet cover from target. Then add a great throw pillow and a gray throw. Effortless and cozy. A grown up loft.

Okay. So you still need a side table and dresser for loft. The short and small dresser ought to work on the left wall. Then the side table next to bed with the poof underneath for extra easy access to set a book or water glass on at night. Plus it looks cool. This clip on lamp from land of nod will be a great height for nighttime reading!

Finally, a fellow Manhattanite! Turn your couch around center it between the windows. not all the way against the wall to ventilate the heater.

I would hang a big art over the fireplace and put your bookshelf against the big wall...to the left of the tv. You may need a narrow console for under the tv. The dining room table can float in the middle of the room, near the stairscase...if it fits, of course.

Just a few accents. I would put the little elephants on the opposite end of the TV desk than the tray. The panther could go on the dresser upstairs with some books and these great bookends. Another place for the bookends could be under the desk on the ground with books. Either way it would be cool.

Are you planning to push your sofa back towards the fireplace? If not, looks like you have plenty of space behind the sofa for a desk facing the TV. If you push the sofa back a bit, I would put a desk under your TV.

Also, I would stack your books in the fireplace.

If you're going to use the fireplace opening as book storage, please use shelves. Books just shoved in, or even neatly stacked horizontally are subject to binding damage, dampness issues and bug infestation. Turns out roaches are voracious book lovers. Vertically and loosely stacking them on shelves gives the paper a chance to dry out from any humidity issues.

Definitely a black desk. Here are a couple options from o.co:

I like the last one because you could use it as a dining table if needed but I'm not crazy about the silver hardware. Brass would look much better. I'd switch out the handles on the second desk if you like it. Here's where I would put your desk:

I think a lot of posts above provided modern, eclectic spaces! I think your headed in the right direction for sure. I am not sure if you are able to return the current pieces in your space. They are nice but the placement for them makes the fairly small room feel even smaller. Again, they are great color wise but size wise we might want to chose, less bulky, more comfortable pieces. I will try to post a proposed layout based on your photos.... That may take a little while though. I'll be back later.

as i think more and more about it , i don't really like my rug at all

looks really cheap and kid like honestly,

i like my sofa though and it is really low which makes the ceiling seem even higher than it is really opening the space up.

so i request you guys to keep this grey sofa in mind but you can discard the blue rug. other color suggestions are welcome as well.

Have you considered getting a folding desk? I have a sewing table that collapses into just the set of drawers... seems perfect for your space. Something like this...

And mirrors... I would add big mirrors to help bounce the light around. It's also a sleek, modern touch.

Okay. The sofa is very workable! :) I think it will fit in your new space well. As for the rug, have you thought at all about using it in the sleeping loft?
While I think its two small for downstairs it might be great up there! Maybe no returns after all! I really love these bookshelves. They combine the modern look your going for with the traditional feel of your apartment!

face the windows . . bookcase next to door to [closet or bathroom] opposite windows, and possibly more low shelving under stair . . if you can get the stacking cube that goes downward, under stair is perfect for shelving - not good for much else .

right now the sofa is taking up too much space - turning its back to the fireplace . . back to entry is fine - once you are "in" the room, it feels bigger . .

Okay. I would put the sofa under the window cooling unit. Push it the whole way up to the brick wall that way you can use a pillow to stretch out and look straight at the TV. You can still have a great dining area and table for homework then. I did also find a bookshelf from IKEA which is pretty see through. About the only place to put a bookshelf is to the left of the TV desk. Plus its from IKEA and very cheap. Also highly versatile to work in your next place.

Ready furniture that can be customized in color and the way you want.

My opinion is that this fireplace hole is useless, so my idea is to put a wooden panel on this wall, up and down, or even using some pretty rug or fabric to behind the couch to plug.

Using this color carpet, use art, accessories and pillows in the same tone to compose.

In a small space it is good to have multipurpose mobile, then the study table, serves meals and if you have stackable chairs, it can turn dinner table or study with friends.

What is the door under the loft? Does it need to be kept clear?

That useless fireplace is eating up half of your room. Ignore it and move the sofa back to the wall. Skip the rug. Your floor is gorgeous and a rug just makes the room smaller anyway and is harder to clean.

Furnish the place from Ikea: low Kallax bookshelf under the air conditioner, two Poang chairs, this sleek coffee table in white, a dining set in wood for a bit of warmth.

Use the money you save on furniture for a fabulous piece of art, something large that will really rock the room. This, perhaps:

Desk/study space in loft. Ideally dressers/rolling rack for hanging clothes against back wall of loft and desk against railing facing windows/tv with a lamp that can be used from bed or desk. Stacked cube storage under stairs. Mirror on wall under desk to reflect sunlight around space and to take selfies in! :) Can hang add’l artwork above and on top of creepy small door so it disappears.
