I meant the drawer front.

In this pic you will see 2 different palcements and what I do if I am not sure is use masking tape and see where you like them but the placement in this pic is perfect IMO.

Where you place your handle on the cabinet drawer front depends alot on the handle itself. If you place the handle centered in the inset you want to make sure it will protrude out far enough that you are still able to get your fingers back behind the pull. You will also want to be aware of the pull length and how that fits on different size drawers. If you are leaning towards placing the pull on the top rail of the drawer, a cup pull always looks nice.

Thank you for your input. The handles we have chosen are in two sizes- quite long and a short one. They will protrude as you mention. I prefer to put in the inset because it seems to balance the drawer look. My husband prefers the handle on the rail. Is there a formula or is it just preference?

It's very much a matter of choice. I find though it also depends on weather or not you have a face frame kitchen or a frameless (Euro style) kitchen, and how thick your style and rails are. A Euro style shaker kitchen with a 2.5" style and rail I think would lend itself better to mounting the handle on the panels (especially if it's a deep drawer). Sort of like this:

Alternately, if it's a face frame style like the photo 2 comments above. I think it looks alright with the hand;es mounted on the top rail. Even when I mount the handles on the panel, I usually mount them 60% up from the bottom as opposed to centred. It just looks better that way.

Can you include a picture of your cabinets? A photo of a bank of drawers would be helpful.

They are IKEA off white cabinets in Grimslov if that might be helpful. The handles are about 12 inches and 5 inches to go horizontally on the drawers and vertically on the doors. We agree on what size goes where, just whether inset or rail.
