Strange Living Room Space. Half-Fireplace. What would you do with it??

I am stuck on what to do with this room. It's the biggest room in the house- the 'great room or living room' and we aren't using it at the moment, though we would like to. Aside from the giant wall of windows which is also causing a privacy and design dilemma, I don't know what to do with the strange wall with the half-fireplace. I have not seen anything like it and am lost on what to do. I don't know if I should have someone come in and add trim to the wall above the fireplace, or leave as is and just add a large chandelier? Or both? I know I probably need built-ins or to buy some cabinets for either side or the fireplace, though not sure which would look better to scale. The fireplace itself just seems bulky- not sure if changing up the mantle somehow would help? We would also like to use a TV in here and it is set up to be placed above the TV though I know that is really a 'no-no.' Just clueless what to do with this. Please help!

It is unusual. This is the closest thing I could find, but if you browse Houzz photos you might find something else. We can't see the whole room in this, but it appears the ledge has been left alone - possibly some type of artwork or ironwork up there, can only see a corner of something in the photo. I think I would move forward with site-built cabinets on either side so they will fit properly. Start working on furniture etc. and let the top section evolve.

Can you take the fireplace all the way to the ceiling? Shelves on each side, leaving the ledge to the right and left of the chimney.

Right? There are all sorts of strange things like this in the house- I thought maybe I was the one who just didn't 'get it' but the more I look into this, apparently that is not the case. Grr. Thank you for the suggestions

No, the builders don't get it. They are never faced with the dilemma of what to put on a useless ledge.

If you can take the fireplace to the ceiling, though, it will be awesome.
