Thanks, Karen. The original kitchen, specifically the tile, was in surprisingly good good condition given the age of the house. I also liked the charm, but it lacked function (and usable counter space). I've only lived in the home 5 years, but I still felt a little sad during the demo. BTW - I saved a bunch of that cornflower blue tile from demolition and plan on making a tribute piece of art with it - maybe a mosaic - and will put it in the kitchen.

I am in the planning stages of renovating a 1950 kitchen. It's so hard to find renos of kitchen from the year 1950 (as opposed to 1950s)!? So, I searched on 1949 renos instead, and found yours. I can't quite tell from the photos....did you replace your cabinets? And, if so, where did you get them?

I loved the before look much better. It suited the kitchen age but then again I could not see from the picture. Maybe the tiles were all broken and needed to be replaced.

Hi Michelle - I did replace the cabinets - base cabs were way too shallow for the modern conveniences I wanted to install. After a lot of research I landed on Fieldcrest. I am still extremely happy with the quality almost 5 years later. Cabinet boxes are 3/4” plywood - no MDF. Paint is holding up and hinges sturdy. I was able to select a cabinet door style that matches the original doors in the house so they really feel integrated into the original style.
