1970's ugly small master bathroom remodel

The floor space in this bathroom is a very small 4'6" wide by 6'8" long not including the current shower inset which measures 36" x 36". I can't increase the floor space so I am working with the layout that I have. I'll probably rip out the shower and redo that in some kind of tile and replace the 36" vanity with a 30" vanity. I need help trying to figure out the tile design. Should I stick with 12x12s for the floor and the shower or perhaps go with 6x12s on the floor to make it look larger? I'm pretty traditional so I don't want to do anything too elaborate. I'm located in Birmingham, AL so I'm also looking for a good contractor that can do everything.

I HAVE THIS SAME SIZED AND LAYOUT BUT MY CABINET IS 30", WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO THE SMALLER SIZE. I'M THINK OF RAISING THE HEIGHT AND GOING WIDER. ALSO I PLAN TO TAKE OUT THE WALL BETWEEN THE SHOWER AND TOLIET OR AT LEAST MAKE IT A HALF WALL. MY SHOWER IS BIGGER AS IT FILLS UP THE SAME WIDTH AS THE BATHROOM.

I would do 12x12 laid on the diagonal for the floor. Take the same tile halfway up the walls squared. You can do an accent stripe above that if you want, then cap it with bullnose. In the shower, do the 12x12's to 3/4 up, then have a line of them on the diagonal, then straight up again to the ceiling. Your contractor (if he's a good finish/cabinet guy too) can build you a custom wood cabinet, finished custom as well. It looks like you have a standard size vanity, so get a granite vanity top from HD. Coordinate your wall color with your tile to make it look the most spacious. Oasis, thanks so much for the design help. I will try that. I do have a cabinet guy that did a wonderful job on my kitchen in 2007 so instead of a 30" vanity I may go with a custom cabinet at 32 or so. Angela, I want to reduce the vanity size from 36" because it is right up against the toilet now and feels cramped (hubby is large guy :). I can't move any walls because of the way the plumbing is configured. The wall on the left of the shower backs up to the plumbing for the toilet in the main bathroom. I wish I could squeeze out another 6" or so for the shower but I can't without spending a fortune.
