You could create a gallery wall of pictures, find two larger pieces of art you like, or use a single piece of art between the two chairs. Art on canvas will cut down on the glare you are concerned about. Are the recessed lights above the chairs aimed at anything in particular?

We really do need to see the whole room. We can't help you decorate just a portion of a wall when we can't see what else is around it.

There were intended to artwork but of course that was not factoring in the end room layout so we'll have to work with them as for as placement.

We are trying to decide whether to do a art work grouping around the seating area and then separate art work under the far right light, maybe a vertical arrangement Or just stick with three larger pieces under each eyeball light.

If you are getting a new console or table for between the chairs, you should get that first before deciding on the wall décor. The rest of the room would dictate what size you should get. More photos of room will help us help you.

You mentioned that this was to be the final seating arrangement, but I sort of feel the chairs feel lost on the wall even when you add a larger table in between. They could be more complimentary facing the couch or on the other side (if possible) and then I would take advantage of the large wall by using a long console, matching lamps, and great art - but leave the art until you have decided on your pieces.

That picture is too hard to see what else is going on there. At a min, if you have a big wall that you don't know what to do with, you can always get some molding pieces, paint them your wall trim color, and create large rectangular sections. That will give you some architectural detail and break up the space even if you don't do anything else.

I will get updated pictures of the room up later tonight. Here is an old picture but more or less this is the room, it doesn't show all of the long wall though. The rug, ottoman and lamp were leftovers from the move and are gone and we will be revamping the bookcase decor. The blue chair remains and the coach stays, it's just too comfortable to replace. As far as the TV, there are no plans on covering it up, we've been down that road. When we are home either it's on or we have family pictures on a slideshow so it's not just a black screen.

Nice room. I would bring the blue chair closer to the ottoman, either across from the 2 chairs or at an angle. It would give more balance to the room with both bookcases showing. Add a closed end table between the chairs.

We did contemplate reversing seating arrangements but the blue chair in that corner felt more natural but that was also without anything else balancing out the long wall. If we were to and a console table then that would add balance and help fill out the horizontal and vertical space. I'll try switching the layout to see how it looks. This might be a great solution.

I also agree about pulling up the blue chair a bit.

If anyone has more suggestions on a console table, coffee table and end table for the chair grouping that is appreciated.

For the art, try a longer narrower print over the seating area.

I agree with njmomma move the matching chairs to window side of room and blue chair to right of FP but not so far back into corner and a console with a lamp and art above it on the long wall

We tried reversing the seating arrangement with the blue chair in the right corner near the wall and the accent chairs by the window and it just didn't seem to work. So here is a picture of how the room looks at the moment. Sorry it's hard to get a full shot of the room with a phone without maybe going far back.

We need art/wall decor for that wall. What are good online resources?

Is putting the sofa against the 16' wall not an option?

It's a large sofa, maybe 8 ft long and very deep so it may work but also maybe distort the layout even more. We really want to keep the room intended for function. Our daily living dictates that we plop on the couch and relax and maybe watch a show. The couch and the TV serve a purpose. We gave up fitting the TV, it's a focal point of modern daily living for many people and we like being able to see clearly it from the kitchen which is on the other side of the family room. The big comfy couch is were we sit 80% of the time and the side chairs are mainly occasional use and for when entertaining. At the end of the day for us they both are fixed pieces and function daily as intended far beyond what any visual or layout benefits of altering them would produce. I think we are locked into the pieces we have and more or less the layout. We are just trying to bring it altogether as best we can.

Thanks for the layout er612, it does look nice but the family likes to crowd up on the couch and watch TV and that's the driving force. Comfortable TV watching is the main goal, second a comfortable reading chair and lastly overflow guest seating and overflow TV seating when the couch is full. We has a "showroom" family room previously with the great conversational arrangement but it was just not how we lived day to day.

I think we would be content if we can just fill out the long wall visually, the seating arrangement is working, not the best but it works for us. The function of the room is in place we just need to finish off the "decorating" aspect to fill out the space and add visual accents and pop.

Your furnishings look beautiful! You mentioned " brighten things up"....are you going to paint anytime soon? The gray walls give it such a dull look. I just kep thinking how lovely this room would be with a pretty paint color.

I would recommend having one art grouping above your two side chairs. Then add a side board or buffet type piece further down and add a mirror or complimenting art piece above that. This will help define your seating area and help fill in the wall space.

Another option would to add wainscoting or batten board to the wall behind your two accent chairs. Then just adding a picture arrange above the two chairs. Just so you have something architectural for your eye to look at.

I agree, launche, that the furniture arrangement is good in the original photo. I would suggest that a more substantial table or cabinet will help visually. Remember that the art work will catch the eye and as long as it is placed with balance, then that's what people will look at, not a blank wall. Whether you do a collage of smaller prints or 3 larger to highlight the area above the chair grouping. it will look nice.

Functionality is important. Get the dimensions of the window and use them on your wall, then buy art, all different sizes and arrange within those dimensions to balance out the room. Then place the chairs with a table in the middle in front of the art.

Wall color will stay the same, we like it. If it looks dull it may be because the artwork and accessories are not in place yet and that there are no lights on.

The family wants to retain the two entry points into the room if possible so a large console table along the wall that blocks the entry may not be high on the list.

The hard part is finding the artwork, I did not imagine it would be this hard to find complimentary sets of art work. Especially large artwork sets that can span 6-12 feet

Lots of good suggestions here, but your room doesn't need painting.

If you flip the room, the blue ottoman will leave no space for a credenza so you might want to leave the arrangement as it. Personally, I would want a larger table between the two chairs for snack, books etc & a large reading lamp. I would also consider a larger floor lamp next to the blue chair and maybe placed slightly behind the chair. See examples below. I think your small red one looks undersized and out dated for the lovely look of your room.

ounds like you have settled on the last picture's seating arrangement. I would therefore pull your couch back a bit towards the end of the rug and then bring the two single chairs down with a much larger table in between and add a lamp (I think you need extra lamps) and accessories for interest. Also multiple framed pictures would be interesting and fill that wall. I would also consider adding a semi flush pendant and if you are planning on adding drapery (linen would be really nice), that will really cozy up the room and add complimentary pillows.

I like Maureen's suggestion for the large pedestal table, lamp and pictures. It makes the room more lived in and interesting. The semi flush pendant in a larger scale would be a good choice too.

The family just got a little task reading lamp for the blue chair, at the moment we aren't sure about a big lamp and big shade in that location although we've seen a few we like

I like the Hilltop photo but don't know if a table that large will work. We did table able moving the couch back a foot or so and pulling the chair up a little. Mainly, the try to get them more centered on the long wall. We talked about a bigger round table between the chairs but a low one. We are going to get another light fixture and drapes as well.

What if you create a second seating arrangement? I actually think this would be practical...

It would split up the long wall so you could group some pics or hang a large piece of art without having to make a gallery.

We did consider chairs behind the couch for when entertaining but felt it cluttered the overall space and it doesn't solve seating in the family room. We've considered most arrangements already and have settled on this current one for the least amount of compromises.

Oh wow - we have the exact same living room and the same exact design problems. What did you end up doing to the space? We have a large sectional that can only go on the left side of the room adjacent to the windows. The opposing wall to the windows is my biggest issue too. Would love to see what you did!
