Our 70's kitchen updated

Our tired 1970's kitchen was ready for a makeover. Gutted to the studs we kept the overall layout except for the placement of the refrigerator which we put on the same wall as the sink and dishwasher. We couldn't be happier.

Lovely, only thing I would change is the ceiling fan. Is it necessary? If so, there are lots of new styles that are much more modern and streamlined. It is really distracting and not in keeping with the style of you new kitchen.

I would have loved to put pendant lighting over the island but the fan really is necessary in the summer months. We have a 1901 colonial which does not have central air in our downstairs or kitchen area. As for style, This particular fans lighting gives off a good deal of much needed overhead lighting. Maybe a bad picture but it looks quite nice in person.

you did a great job! please share what brand/model cabinets you have.

I, too, have a (hideous) 70's kitchen that only has cabinets on two walls (aka no space for anything) and the two bare walls have water-based baseboards. that will be my next BIG project in the house.

Motorcyclegirl, the cabinets I chose were Kabinart - Dover is the door style. I also had baseboard along my one open wall where I now have lower cabinets only along the entire wall. My understanding is that you can install toe kick heaters which will push the heat out but I believe they are pricey but my contractor was able to cut notches in the bottom of the cabinets and install registers to allow the heat to come through. I guess we will see when it gets cold. As for the project itself, do your research....it's worth it.

Wow........You dun good!!!! Your original drawer and door pulls....well, I have no words. Your redo is just fabulous. I can't think of one thing you missed. As for the fan, no one would have one if it were not necessary. No one likes to clean those things, but it is a small price to pay for your results.

Looks great! I'm in the middle of remodeling a classic tiny 60s kitchen myself! I can't wait to post before & after pics. I'd be interested in more before pics if you have them. My kitchen isn't nearly as large as yours, though. What is your granite's name?

Pretty kitchen! Nice cabinets. Not the usual run of the mill white cabinets people use. Is the counter quartz or marble?

Beautiful job, but that ceiling fan is wrong for the space. This would be a better choice, more streamlined and updated. It's by Minka Aire and is not expensive.

Really love the kitchen but agree the ceiling fan is all wrong. No problem having one, but needs to not have wood blades and needs to be a more updated style.

I have basically the same 1970s kitchen layout. I'm just as finicky about fan aesthetics, but I am in total agreement with Patricia. You simply have to have that direct lighting for kitchen tasks on the island. I live in Georgia and have AC, but ceiling fans are a must. It is hard to find a gorgeous, updated fan that has the good lighting.

Re: hard to find gorgeous well-lit fans:

I have had a couple projects where fans were a must. This picture doesn't do it justice but the Artemis fan in Clear is amazing. Moves a lot of air. Has a great sleek look, and has adequate, dimmable light. If you have the budget for it, it's great! Search for Artemis fan in houzz and I believe some project photos will come up. http://www.build.com/minkaaire-artemis/s423557?uid=286478

Thanks everyone for the questions and comments. Just to answer those questions...the kitchen is about 15 x 16. The door in the kitchen is not new but was there when we purchased the home. It leads to a small room which is currently being used as a very small office area but could be converted to a walk in pantry very easily. The countertops are granite I.e. Colonial White. As for the fan ....our 7 1/2 foot ceilings really play a part in any fan selected so practicality wins out sometimes but I do appreciate the suggestions.

I think the ceiling fan looks lovely and I know how necessary a fan is. Kitchens get HOT and women get hot! LOL

Did you move the door next to the ovens? I couldn't tell from the original picture. Lovely remodel!

I don't know why people have such issues with ceiling fans. They serve a purpose, and come in so many different styles. The ceiling fan in this kitchen looks nice. It may not be everyone's taste, but it doesn't have to be.

We are also doing a white kitchen and wanted a gray subway tile backsplash, but we are having a hard time picking out countertops. What is the name of yours? Your kitchen is beautiful, great job! :)

    patricia713 thanked Andrea Floss

Susan we did not move the doorway. The oven was moved closer to the doorway. Andrea the granite is colonial white. Our backsplash is actually more a mossy green but does take on a gray tone

    Wow this is great!

patricia713 thanked Addition Building & Design, Inc.

The dimensions for the island are 51 inches by 51 inches. The overhang in on 2 sides only at 12 inches. I have four stools for seating and plenty of room.

Thank you Patricia, very helpful as we attempt to make some decisions on our space. It doesn't look like you have any support for the overhang, is this correct?

That's correct. I believe 12 inches was the maximum before we would need additional support .
