That is the first thought I had when I saw these chairs was a glass table but just not sure it's our style…it would look lovely with these chairs, though.

Here are a few chair treatments, but I don't think any of these chairs can compete with the lines of your cane back French chairs.

#1. Painted white -- don't care for this look. Detracts from the chairs' beauty.

#2. Brown stain -- again, IMO this doesn't enhance the chair.

#3. I think this wood treatment is closer to what would complement your room. Like the inclusion of nail heads.

#4 - A combination of grey & greige. I don't think this would enhance your room.

Not all these examples have cane backs. But in terms of table shape, I think a round table enhances the chairs' rounded back.

Ethan Allen "decorators" are salespeople. There are many other choices for your table. Are you near a design center? Call and make an appointment if you are. See what's out there. Also, have you seen these chairs in person, sat on them? They are lovely, just hope you are not buying these online and they are returnable. I'm assuming you bought this house with the current wallpaper and window coverings.Take your time with the table and other furnishings for the room. It s best if you have a design plan before buying each piece separately. A professional designer could help you come up with a design according to needs, taking into account form, function, size and scale of furniture.
She can incorporate your current pieces and come up with a plan that you can slowly work towards.

The tables you posted IMO, will not work in your room, especially if you plan on purchasing the chairs.
The bases are very heavy.

Seeing the chairs and room it invoked images of Waverly drapes in a Toile pattern. But that was then.

Honestly, I would be on the hunt for an oval Louis the XVI Table

Then add a transitional oriental rug with a muted bluePaint over the grasscloth (yes it can be done) in favor of a pale blue/grey or very light yellow wall and a sheer Belgium linen drape in the same color as the walls.

For lighting I would suggest something that was NOT a crystal chandelier

As for other furnishings I would stick with transitional

@lucidos I love the whitewashed oval table you posted! I feel that is more our style but would still fit in with the room's decor and chairs. Our preference is less work the better since we are so new at this decorating thing. I get nervous about painting the walls as it looks so pretty now but I do like that idea. If we get the chairs and then table, rug and lighting selected, we will see how it comes together and if walls would make a difference. I think I will definitely do some drapes to help tie the room together. And, I like the linen to lighten the room up some since we have the heavier wallpaper. THanks so much! Great ideas!

@SandyC. The woman is actually bringing the chairs over so we can see them and test them in our dining room on Friday so that will be nice to see them and test them out in person. I think we may have to hire a decorator to help us pick out the final pieces but I want to make sure I have a solid idea of what I want to save time and money before doing so. This is all very helpful feedback. The more I see and hear the ideas, the more I hope these chairs work. I know they are pretty expensive to buy brand new so hope we are getting a good deal.

The colder blue/grey on the grasscloth with the original peeking is such a wonderful blend. You have to be sure the paint is thin enough (std flat latex) so that the original color bleeds through. I love the grasscloth walls as is, they are so neutral, they will go with anything. I think it would look great at night because the darker walls would recede. The blinds are very neutral too, it's a win-win.

Too bad you can't get 8 chairs, I think a square table may compliment the shape of your room. The decor in the photo is irrelevant, but you get the idea of a square table with the same shape of your chairs. It's a bit different than the usual oval or round.

LOVE the wall treatments, custom blinds, mouldings, and beautiful floors. Please don't change the work that has already been done. Build on these good bones with: furniture pieces; choosing the chairs' and table's stains/paints and upholstery; and the curtain hardware and fabric.

I think you're going to have a stunning room!

@croftygal, Hooker Furniture has a wide variety of French shabby chic inspired dining room tables.

Those tables came from One Kings Lane. The 1st is rd and only 60" so not sure if all chairs could fit around it. With your room, any would fit, just comes down to personal preference and of course what you can find and how much you' re willing to pay.

@Bette P Gorgeous picture! I never thought much of a square table but it looks so pretty in that picture. Thanks for your feedback about the wall and window treatments. It's nice to know that we may not need to change everything right from the get go and it will still look good. I was thinking getting this 6 chairs and having different "head of the table" chairs eventually to go with a rectangle or oval table.

You know, there are a lot of people that are downsizing and selling dining room suites. You might be able to pick up a table and sideboard from Craigslist, an auction, Antique store or consignment shop, yard sale or Estate sale for a very good price. You might find a chandelier the same way. I live in Canada, I see so many dining sets on Kijiji that are gorgeous.

You said you are not 'high end people'. I love the mix of traditional and a bit pared down, cleaner lines, supposedly modern, shown in the 1st and 2nd photos below. Don't be afraid to look for a parsons style table. Love the round table in the 2nd photo. You could mix traditional and a bit rustic, like the 3rd photo. They are certainly not boring rooms. I don't know what quality or price point you are looking at.
World Market and such are great for small accessories, but I would not recommend for a major piece of furniture like your dining table. Their pieces are made overseas, not great quality. Have you ever tried one of their chairs? Cute, but not very functional.

So bad news! I saw the chairs in person and they were beautiful but definitely more antique-y than I envisioned. We decided to pass as I was concerned they would not hold some of our heavier relatives and needed more TLC than I wanted to give. However, all of your advice has been invaluable and I definitely have a better idea of what we want to do with this space now thanks to your input. Thank you all so much. Will keep you updated on what we decide to do...

kroftygal, sorry to hear that the chairs were a disappointment. Hope you're not too discouraged. But, the reality is, when decorating a meaningful space, it usually takes some starts-and-stops. I think the only rooms that are decorated on the first pass, are when guys move into their dorm room ;-)

@lucidos I think we definitely want a rectangle table. Not sure color but I am drawn towards lighter tones than darker, although thinking darker will help offset the sea cloth and make the room feel more formal. I also really like the nail head type style of chairs now that we are starting from scratch. I think my first start will be to determine best color of wood for chairs and table and fabric to go with the beige in our room. Thinking something like this for the chairs with the head chairs with arms...

Yes and those chair legs come in a variety of tones for the legs so they can correspond with the table.

They should correspond not necessarily match. You wouldn't want to mix a mahogany finish with a distressed or pickled table unless you are aiming for Bohemian.

To get a better visual on the size and shape of the table give us the dimensions of the room that include widow sizes, doors and openings and we can mock up a few shapes.

Okay met with designer today & she recommends keeping grass cloth as is but decided to do dark oval wood table with most likely a gray linen set of chairs to pull the gray accents from the grass cloth since I loved the gray grass cloth wall images. Will keep you updated with end result. Hopefully it all comes together. Seriously all of your feedback made the visit with the designer so much easier!

I would suggest a rather plain, traditional style rectangular table with four legs (rather than pedestal or trestle style) in a medium wood tone to showcase the lovely dining chairs. If you can find a French provincial dining table, that would be great too!
