The table is 40" x 66". We also have two 12" leaves for it.

I am totally stumped on the chandelier -- I'm trying to avoid a drum light, because it will block the view of the hutch from the main hallway.

No other light fixtures in view... yet. The dining room is just off of the foyer. We need a flushmount for the foyer, but are waiting until we get a chandelier to pick that out.

Your room is 12x12. Rule of thumb is add both together for 24 and that is size dia for fixture in room. Most times it is a good size over any table (if the table fits the room, which yours does) so look for chandelier that is 24" in dia. Bottom of chandelier should be 30-32" from top of table. I posted right size in photos.

The only other light fixture on the first floor is in the kitchen, and not visible from the dining room.

You should actually want everyone to notice the chandelier not the china cabinet :>)

Thanks -- there are some great ideas and inspiration here! Bette, good eye -- it is the Brasilia regular table & larger hutch, and there is a smaller hutch base out of view that we're using as a little server. It took a long time to track down; we bought the pieces from three dealers in two states, but it was totally worth it.


One thing that I'm struggling to reconcile is the choice of metals. The rest of the house is all brushed nickel everywhere, down to the door hinges. Brass feels like a good choice for this room, but I'm wondering if it will look out of place with the rest of the house. Thoughts?

Mixing metals is fine in instances like this. You have some gold tones in your rug so brass would be a good choice.

The George Nelson Criss Cross saucer lamp has a 5 1/4 inch nickel ceiling plate and a bit of nickel trim on the bottom, both are not that noticeable, the fixture itself is the focus. The medium size is 25 inches across, sounds about right for the size of your room and the table.

I love this Currey and Company chandelier, even though it is quite pricey. Would it work in our space?

angiegrace, if you're still around I wanted to tell you that I had to return my rug as the fibers kept falling out. It did it from the first day I got it, but I was hoping it would stop. When we repainted a wall and my husband saw what was happening he decided it was junk so we returned it. It's too bad as it's a pretty rug. I don't know if I just got a defective one or what....

Actually it was a blessing in disguise as I went with a larger version of the rugs I have around my house that is also very colorful, and it was on sale for less than $200. With the money we got back, we put it towards a new sofa so things worked out well.
