I think the furniture is actually quite nice. Changing the rug as suggested would help.

Also remove the mirror and find art work to go there. Remove the two side lites and do floor to ceiling drapery on this window and the other one. Could that bookcase piece in the corner go in an office?

I was just going to suggest the same as angel18432 ... remove the mirror and replace with some cool, colorful artwork! You can reupholster the chair seats yourself in a brighter color, one found in the artwork perhaps.

I think changing with new chairs is what is needed. Do not change the rug. It is fine. Lower the light fixture to be 36" above the table. If you have enough space, pull the rug & table toward the living room space so you will have enough room to move the cabinet to the left of the side window to be centered under the window. Remove the extra chairs to somewhere else until needed. You may also need to change the table to a different style. What do you think?

The room needs some pattern and color. A couple suggestions:

--Change out four of your existing chairs. Add four upholstered Parsons chairs in a pattern. (This one is from Overstock.com)

--Get a solid or ombre rug in one of the colors from the chairs.

--Reupolster the seats of the two existing side chairs in a color from the new chairs.

Here's a Martha Stewart ombre blue rug from Overstock.com. Or just the blue from whatever upholstered chairs you get.

First, remove the window shade and use drapery panels.

I like a mirror in a dining room for the sparkle factor, especially one across from a window. However, you could use a good-sized one with a modern, slightly ornate frame in white, cream, or a blue and gold. Ballard has beautiful mirrors. Sometimes you can find mirrors with ornate frames at thrift shops and paint them. In your case white would work with your trim. This would mix things up a little and get away from all the safe matchiness, which you seem to want a break from.

I like the idea of recovering the seat cushions of the chairs in a lighter, brighter color. May be pull a red tone from your area rug. Good sized, comfortable chairs can be expensive so keeping the chairs would be more economical than buying new. I would remove the small cabinet and the bar stool to give a more open feeling. The light fixture could be lowered or could be replaced with something a tad larger. A bigger mirror or a large piece of art would also help.

Keep the table and chairs, but ditch the rug, mirror and light fittings.

Poster, first thing is clear out the cabinet shoved into the corner. Roll up the current rug, take down the mirror, move out the extra chairs.

Good to start with a more empty space. We just get attached to things and basically stop "seeing" them.

The walls, furniture and floor all seem to be close to same color and equal value. I think a white rug, painting chairs black...

Cindy, remove all the pictures and accessories off the cabinets. Look for a new rug. I like mirror in dining area, but that one needs updating. Keep the chairs and re-cover when you pick rug/mirror picture.

I wouldn't do blue in the dining room. Depresses the appetite. Coordinate rug and art.

There are only about 200k photos of blue dining rooms on Houzz. If people are hungry they eat, no matter what the color of the rug on the floor.

Art is personal choice. Pick something you like with the colors in the rug. It doesn't have to be oriental. Have you decided on chairs, keep and re-cover, or replace?

I think you are right on. Buying new chairs is expensive and better to put that money in fabric, drapes and art.

There are two windows in the room. Is there some reason you only want to put drapes on the one window?

I think you should do both windows, cindy, but hang the drapes in a neutral color that has little contrast to walls. That will keep the room open, yet have cohesiveness for all windows. if walls are a lite greybeige then get panels that are 1 shade lighter or darker to give definition but not close off the walls. If you don't need privacy, then put up some sheers to give the room a light and airy feel. If you need the blinds on the one window, leave them there for now. Make sure you get enough panels that they have fullness when open.

Oops! Ignore the foreground, that is my kitchen island. Anyway, there is a glass insert on a standard door to the left, and then double windows beyond that.

I would get one rod for side and end window (yes they come up to 144") and just do sheers or linen like panels on each end. Simple but pretty. Again, if you don't need for privacy, shame to spend a lot of money for needless décor. And the view to back yard is nice. Yes, you could spend hundreds of $ making them a showcase with drapes and roman shades. I just don't see the need unless you want to go that route. With your new décor on wall and new seat covers. It will look fab. Do not do anything with windows until you get your furniture arranged and décor up. Then decide on curtains.

A new lighting fixture with more character/contrast and also lowered would add interest. Out with the mirror and show some character with a bold piece of large art or a grouping of smaller pieces that appear as a large piece. Add two buffet lamps (tall thin) to the console. It's ok to overlap the lamps over the art, it adds depth & interest. The paint appears to be the same color as the adjacent room, you could darken the dining room paint a shade or two.

I am getting an Asian sort of vibe from your dining room. Could you move the corner cabinet out and lower the other blinds (looks like they are on all the windows and match?), then post the same photo shot again?

If you do drapes: very simple and sheer. Sheer linen perhaps.
