Are these chairs wrong?

Wondering if these chairs are wrong--should they be a color or do I bring in some kind of a color (have no idea which color) with artwork & pillows?

May also want to add a couple of complementary color pieces in the bookcase to draw the eye up a bit from rug to bookcase.

This one might be nice on the sofa. I think I'd like it better than the solid aquas.

Just wanting to see some colors side by side.

Sorry, I accidentally posted one of those pillows twice in the comment just above.

The photos of the rug in the store and the rug on the floor look nothing alike. I love the rug in the store; on the floor, not so much. The size is definitely better than the old rug, but the color...wrong, I think.

I also think the chairs are great. I'd keep 'em. Keep the sectional, too. I'd play off the green in the fireplace surround with rug, pillows, and art.

It looks like the Chairs are a tone that does go with your rug. I would use the rug for your color lead in the room. Meaning use those colors to pull over some pillows to the chairs and the sectional and possibly window treatments. The room looks a little dark to me so I would encourage you to consider taking out the marble surround of the fireplace and lightening it up with a lighter marble or using some type of lighter natural stone. That would give you some contrast that I think would dramatically change the space. Good Luck!!

Well , the rug in the store always looks different! If this is a handwoven there will be a "light" side and a "dark" side. If you want the light side to be prominent when you walk in the room determine which side it is and switch it around. This may be the case here. I think this color looks lovely in this space but of course it is an individual matter of taste.

I changed pillows. There were 2 other multicolored lumbar pillows there that weren't as creamy....should I exchange? is this rug too blue? Should I cover marble surround with a cream? Paint frame of mirror?? Wow! I didn't realize there are so many things to take into consideration .... This is a very difficult job that you all have--I applaud you all! I'm sorry for being such a pain

You've had a busy day mmmjs5! Don't worry, we can all help figure it out fairly soon and you're most definitely not a pain!

Until, I saw the third of the four pics above, I loved the rug. But, in that pic, it looks decidedly blue compared to the fireplace. Does it look too blue in person?

I'd definitely slow down on the pillows (maybe return them) until the rug is figured out. Don't worry, it won't take too long.

I'm going to assume we'll be working with the green of the fireplace but if you're planning on changing that, it opens up just about any color direction. Are you thinking of changing that? I don't think I would, but that's irrelevant.

So, how about backtracking and deciding what will definitely stay or what might go. Green around fireplace, sofa, chairs - those are the 3 things I'd decide first. I think they can all be worked with fairly easily, but if any are leaving, that's important to know.

Grover, where did you find your first rug? I like that one. Is your second rug the West Elm Lapis, by any chance? It's not my favorite of the three, but I like the color.

I think you should live with the carpet for a few days to see how you like it. You don't have any artwork up, you need a good size coffee table, drapery side panels would look nice. If you take these things into consideration you might be able to make up your mind a bit easier. Many of us think it is a lovely color but we are not there and you have to live with it. You could put any color in this pretty room and make it work. It really is up to you what color you love.
Here are a few rugs I thought were nice. You can do traditional, contemporary, modern... Your space can carry any of these.
But I'm not sure I would design your room around your marble as someone previously suggested as it is something you may want to change in the future. These could work too.

Ann, all the rugs I Photoshopped were from Plush Rugs.

I like the marble fireplace. I wouldn't change it. It suits the room. I'd just find art and a rug that better complements the green.

I agree the marble fireplace suits the room. I also think its color is pretty with the surrounding wood.

Mmmjs5, are you too exhausted from your busy day to want to talk about your room anymore today?

mmmjs5, I think you are getting too many conflicting ideas right now. I liked your chairs just fine. In fact, much better than the ones you had from earlier photos. Someone said you needed art desperately. This is wrong as you had a collection of nice art on the walls from an earlier photo. Maybe just a little editing was needed however, nothing big. Please sit down & do not worry about all the conflicting ideas being given. Take a break from us crazies & all will be better, I'm sure.

Paint ceiling trim the same as wall. I like the green. If you were to paint the bookcases, do the backs a aqua light shade. Or a shade that matches wall. It will show up better.

I like the green marble, I think you should keep it. Find a rug that complements it, Grover has already posted four PS examples with greenish rugs. I gather you don't want to paint the woodwork, so you'll need something else that lights up the room. Therefore I think you should look at the cooler side of the colour spectrum for a rug, art and curtains.

I'd love to see lynartist's first traditional rug in the room. It seems like it would show off the green marble and warm tones surrounding the mantle, wood, and dark sofas. And grover's last two rugs have the warm tones of the wall, no greens, so they "present" the whole fireplace area...Ta-dahhh! The last one's my favorite of those two. Do you think a dark/black fire screen would "disappear", so would show off the fireplace area better? I hope you don't paint any of that wall or built ins; they give so much character and warmth to your room. --I admit I'm a sucker for rich, warm wood and green together.

Ooh. I also like the third rug of grover's in her/his first trio of rugs shown in your room, too, as it incorporates some of the other colors, but not too much green/blue. I liked the rug you brought home, but think whether it's green or blue, it's perhaps overpowering the marble.

I meant to add-- What a gorgeous mantle!

The reason your room is not working is because of the Blue Grey undertones. Return your chairs and purchase Green Grey. You cannot ignore the green marble as it is dictating that color in your color scheme. Or go with a cream (yellow undertones) colored chair.

Your chairs need to be on the rug, fully or partial. Purchase pillows last. Develop a color scheme, take paint chips and match at store. I envision one of the green choices as JudyG specified with gold accents. Start there and see where that takes you towards inspiration shopping. Are you looking to replace any of your tables?
    Hope this helps.

If you choose to not keep the blue rug, which I happen to think looks fine, I would take a second look at the first rug that lynartist posted, the one with blues, greens, and Browns. I think it would pull the green from fireplace surround, the brown sofa sofa and everything together beautifully. I think the room needs rich colors. I think it is a beautiful room!!

Looks like you've centered the rug with the fireplace which is usually the right thing to do. In this case it ends up sticking out into the walk way with the small table on it. So it might be better to pull the rug under the sofa more and since the sofa isn't centered w/fp that will do away with that 3 foot section that's just hanging out. Also, pull the rug away from the fireplace about 4 or 5 inches. Worth a try or maybe the rug is just too wide?

Hi, mmmjs5, well your head must be spinning by now:) By no means should you keep a rug that you feel is the wrong color, but cudos for stepping out of your comfort zone! I do stand by my belief that you do not have to swath your room in green to match your fireplace. Green is a neural color; it's complimentary color is red. In your case being that the marble is green /blue, a cool red( wine) would look best. Not to say many other colors won't work here and I'm not going to get into a lesson on color theory. Have attached some picks for inspiration and hope they help. Try several types of rugs until one rings your bell. Good luck!

I want to thank you all so very much! Yes, my head was spinning (that's why I took the day off from that room & went golfing ;) I do love the burst of color so I will continue to look for a different rug tomorrow & return all the pillows & I promise not to jump into everything so quickly. You have all given me so many examples, hopefully, it won't be too difficult. I also appreciate your good thoughts on the room/fireplace wall. Enjoy your weekend & hope to be posting again next week! Thanks again!

Glad to have you back, mmmjs5. I was afraid we scared you away. And glad you're game to keep trying. Whatever you do, it's a beautiful room already, so just be patient and the right rug will come along one day.

Those chairs look well made. What if you switched the pillows for some teal pillows that ma tech the fireplace? Also sit in a chair as though you were a guest. Where would you put down your drink? Perhaps each chair could be closer to those side tables. That would anchor them and make them not appear to be floating due to their light color in a darker toned room. l like the dark colors in your room, it makes if feel cozy.

I'm glad you're back too mmmjs5! I agree the burst of color is nice. I really like the fireplace and I think the room is very nice if the rug has "strength" of color like the fireplace. So, maybe that rug wasn't perfect but it was pretty close, so I think it gave you a good idea of what to look for - along with any renderings that have appealed to you. Looking forward to chatting again next week!

How's the room coming along, mmmjs5?

Unfortunately, the colorful rugs were a bit too hard to live with ... It was easier for me to bring color in with the pillows. I still have a lot of work to do. You are all right about the chairs being fine & as suggested, I will find some throws. I will also cover the footstool between the chairs with some fabric that "pops" to play off of, I hope.

Im thinking about this piece of art for the wall & maybe will add to make a gallery wall because I am having a very difficult time finding 1-2 large pieces.

I really want to thank you all for helping me. When I complete this room with final ottoman, drapes, artwork etc. I will post another picture.

    Lovely! :)
Grover, where did you find that big pig art on the wall over the sofa???

I like your new rug a lot. I love the Maeve Harris painting. You should be able to get it 4' wide at least. Will that be too small over the sofa?

I'd tone down the pillows a lot. If you go with the Maeve Harris art, I'd have pillows only in green, rust, and perhaps the tan from the rug.

Good question, moogers. Probably Gallery Direct. Let me see if I can find it again.

Well, that was pretty easy, moogers. Here is the pig: http://www.gallerydirect.com/art/product/st-john/cob-roller

When I saw a unity between chairs and coffee tabletop it felt nice... then beneath it a rug with subtle contrast in warm tone, again nice.

Nearer to eye, smaller too were pillows in bright colors!! like a juicy apple, very nice room I'd say!!! Horse is a horse of course... nice too.

After reading all the comments it looks like your room will be wonderful. I wonder if you need something lighter color above fireplace as it seems so dark in the pictures. You ( or someone) mentioned painting the frame of the mirror?

With this nice new rug choice, I agree with grover, I'd tone down the pillows a ton, These pillows would have been good if the rug choice would have been strong and vibrant, but with the new rug choice (very nice choice), I think the pillows need to follow along. Grover had some good pillow examples in her renderings with more mellow rugs.

Love the art choice too, if it comes in a big enough size!

Thank you, Grover! For some reason, I love that pig! :)

It's a very fine pig, moogers!
