I think an exterior with horizontal lines and shutters could help on a smaller budget.

I would suggest adding width to the columns; removing the tree that's too close to the house; painting the door a subdued (not bright) red for more interest; and adding landscaping along both sides of the entry path starting at the sidewalk and continuing in front of the house.
