This is exactly what happened to DS and DIL's bonded leather sofa and love seat. This picture should be kept and posted every time someone posts about buying top grain leather vs bonded.

Margo, I was hoping to buy a leather couch until I started researching them and found out that bonded leather is really just a nice name for vinyl. I would love a nice REAL leather couch but I can't justify the cost so I'll settle for cloth.

Hayley, why not keep your eye out on Craigslist for a gently used one? Many times I see practically new ones being sold due to people relocating and not wanting to move them. I have bought and sold many things off Craigslist. Some from beautiful homes!

Margo, I've been on Craig's List where I did find a cute boned leather sofa in decent shape for $65 that I bought. A lot of the others were either so overpriced so looked so dumpy that I wasn't impressed. It would have to be just the right one in the right area for me to consider it. My husband really doesn't want a leather sofa, and I don't know enough about them to be able to tell the difference. This one I bought will do until I can save for a new one.

Michael, those all look huge! Do you really have the space for something that big? Just asking because they are going to look much larger at home than they do in the store.

I think all three were good looking, did you decide on one, or still looking? Is the leather one real leather or bonded again? I would be concerned about it.

I'm still undecided. There's a sale on base for furniture but it ends tomorrow. I'll probably just wait til the end of the month to see if there are any Labor Day sales or just look around on Craig's list.

Is NEX a furniture store like Ashley Furniture? I have an aversion to Ashley Furniture, their stuff seems like it's all bonded leather or particle board with veneers, and falls apart in a few years. Also, just a month or two of sitting in the same spot in the couch makes the fabric (or "bonded" leather aka vinyl) wear down or get wrinkly; it seems like their stuff shows wear SO FAST.
It depends on if one intends on keeping furniture for years (decades), or replacing every few years.

I'm sitting on a couch right now which was purchased from a "real" furniture store in 1991. Structurally, it is the same as when it was new. I tossed the cushions a few years ago and took of the skirt at bottom for a cleaner line. It does have a slipcover on it. But imagine putting a slipcover on a shoddily-crafted couch from a place like Ashley Furniture, now that's lipstick on a pig.
