Above Cabinet Blah

We previously had family picture and whatnot above the cabinets but after suggestions that I "declutter" on previous posts I did so and am glad. However, my husband misses the pics being above the cabinets and thinks the area is too "blah" when empty. I'm looking for a budget-friendly compromise to dress up the area but avoid the cluttered feel. Any suggestions?

How about a few choice baskets or unique pottery items;)

Hmmm...I'm not big on baskets but pottery sounds like a great idea and I happened to have some in another room I need to declutter! Thanks!

I would "box" in the area above, add crown molding. Paint everything to match cabinets. There are tutorials on Pinterest and on-line. Or just add a really thick crown molding. I used a low profile molding because I still wanted to have the space but it made the cabinets look so much better!
