Tiffany: I love your rug. I makes a statement. I would therefore go for more beige with just a touch of blue for the window treatments (see attached link: https://www.greenhousefabrics.com/fabric/a6090-fawn). When it comes to additionall furniture:

a) glass coffee table such as http://www.wayfair.com/Eurostyle-Sandor-Coffee-Table-EY2245.html so you can continue to see the rug design through it. Many find another smaller round one to place between the chairs. Glass also makes the room look lighter. For accessories try some candles and art on the walls. For art find out if there is a studio or art school in your home town. The are usually a couple of art exhibits a year where you can find what you like not what looks good on the walls.

I was thinking a glass coffee table too! The space is so big, I wasn't sure where to place it. For the curtains, do you think 2" blinds would look ok with sheer curtains?

What do you guys think about this table? We have kiddos around the house a lot so I worry about the all glass top (even though I know this would highlight the rug the best).

Is it possible to find a glass table with the glass encased in a wood frame for added safety? I agree the rug makes a statement with the beautiful colors and the interesting shapes. For curtains, I would suggest you find plain curtains in the same blue as in the rug to contrast with the other, neutral colors.

I think I would worry less about the glass top with a toddler, but I would be concerned with the sharp metal corners on a table. No matter what table you get unless it is all fabric, there will be edges. It is pretty hard to break a glass top table.

You can't go wrong with curtains the same shade and tone as the wall paint. Bring your color into the room with accessories and art.

Your rug is very strong so I think you could try doing curtains in lighter tones of rug colors but in a geometric pattern to balance out that rug and make it not the only think you look at in the room. It demands attention.

So... after much consternation, I decided to move the rug into our reading room. I feel like it really pulls that space together in a much better way than the living room. So now it's back to the drawing board with the living room. I'll post picks of how the reading room turned out when it's done! I know... I'm a VERY frustrating novice decorator! :)

Ok, the sofas are a charcoal color and the chairs are a pewter chenille fabric. Do you think I could start over with these curtains and a whole new color scheme? I wanted yellow but hubby isn't convinced. My daughter picked out the bottom right print today, but no idea if I can make it work in this space. I'm hopeless.

Have you tried positioning the sofas in an L-shape (the one closest to the patio door stays in place and the other faces the TV) with an end table between the two?

yes, but unfortunately it makes the walking space behind the sofa too tight. I was really bummed about it too because that was the original plan. It's hard to tell right now, but the two chairs are separated/angled with a small table between.

I'll move it around tomorrow and post a pic just to see if I'm doing it wrong :)

The room needs rearranging first. Put the couch where the tv is and get a big piece of artwork behind it to fill up the space. The tv should go on the opposite wall to the left and leave the love seat where it is for now and put the two chairs across from the love seat. If the tv unit is too big, separate them. I can't tell if you have two pieces together or if it is all one piece. I love your rug too. This arrangement will open up the room more too

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for your help so far! I've moved the rug somewhere else and this room is now "blank slate." Unfortunately, I cannot change the location of the TV because of the cable outlet. Our home is older and the cable company cannot add more lines without doing a lot of plaster work. I think I might make a separate post just to make it less difficult to follow? I know you guys hate me right now!

Design takes time and a lot of effort to get it 'right' and you are doing that, They don't say enjoy the process for nothing as it is going to take a while till you like the room.

Ok I moved the furniture layout and I agree this looks more open and inviting that the previous. The half broken ottoman in the center is going to reupholstered once I finally pick a color scheme. I feel like the tan/blue/gray theme was too washed out and muted for our family's style. I still loved the old rug and moved it to a different location (last picture). I'll work on that room after the living room =) My apologies for the dogs.

I like the arrangement of your furniture, maybe even spread out a bit more. If you have recliners do you need a cocktail table?

Yes, the last photo shows the new location for the rug because it really didn't feel right in the living room. Of course the new room it's located in needs work, but I'm going one room at a time so I'm not overwhelmed! :) To answer your question about cocktail tables: we haven't purchased anything yet. I hate wasting money on things that don't work in the room. The recliners were a very expensive mistake! Just trying to make it work now.

I think the furniture you have is very sleek and looks comfortable. It just needs the correct 'frame' and Houzz is here to help. I like your bold choices and it will reflet you and your family when it is finally done. Go for it! I hope you use the red curtains and the bird prints. They will look beautiful together and I think they will work with the leather if you add rustic accessories and natural wood. Something to think about?

Thank you! I'm searching for some natural wood elements after a failed attempt at upcycling our old ottoman. For some reason I thought it would look nice to cover it with cedar planks. It ended up looking like an indoor picnic table on top of a leather footstool. Not as chic as we expected. Luckily it only cost us around $30 in supplies. So... now we are back to the drawing board.
