I don't have any specific suggestions, but I've seen a lot of people use Wood Hollow here for drawer inserts. They are custom wood inserts that you can order from their eBay store. We have Shiloh cabinets and they didn't offer a lot of storage solutions for drawers, so we decided to go with Wood Hollow. We are using our new kitchen for a few weeks to decide exactly where everything will go in the new layout and then I'll order the inserts once I kind of get a feel for how things work in there. Following this thread though, in case someone has other/better suggestions.

Tray dividers are wonderful for cutting boards and baking sheets. We also love Super Susans for corners.

Have you done a search for past threads on this topic? A lot of good information has been shared and I'm sure it would be helpful to you (it was to me). Start here.

The newspaper is temporary. We'll remove the drawer this weekend, pull the organizer out, remove the newspaper and then put the organizer back in the drawer.

I absolutely LOVE my Wood Hollow cutlery insert! It is one of my favorite things.

I bought my drawer dividers from Bed, Bath and beyond. They are expandable bamboo ones and I quite like them. My tray dividers were put in by the contractor and are a joy to have.

Another Wood Hollow fan here. I provided them with measurements and the layout I wanted for four drawers. Very happy with what they produced.

Wood hollow for utensils, silverware and my spice/baking stuff combination drawer. I gave them measurements and how much space for spices and how I wanted the rest configured and that's what they made. I love it.

Keep in mind that I designed it to hold my regular everyday spices (which I did count and measure) which from what I gather isn't near as many as others, lol!

Holy cow.. Wood Hollow looks awesome. I had not thought it was that easy. I figured we had to do it ourselves or have it built by the cabinet people. Great thread tyvm. I bookmarked the ebay link.. heh

This may not be exactly what you're asking, but I LOVE lazy susans in my upper cabinets. Makes it so easy to find spices, etc. that otherwise scoot themselves to the back of cabinets. I just have plain old lazy susans from B,B&B.

mrspete I had one before and they would always fall off when I'd turn it - maybe I was a little too forceful with my spin, hehehe. Plus my spices would be 2 deep and then I felt like I was always moving them and picking them up and knocking them over to find 'the one'. Anyhow - for me this works much better and I can see them all at once.

We put this next to stove and I would not do it again. Utensils flop around and right away a metal spatula moved as drawer was closing and made mark on cabinet. I like the idea but now have only plastic there

Brdrl, that would work great under a bath vanity for straightener, curling iron, etc.

FWIW, I had a pegboard bottom installed in my dish drawer and mortally hated it. A rubber mat worked 100 times better.

Good to know that, MizLizzie. I was considering something like that.

I don't even use a rubber mat. With soft closing drawers, it's just not necessary (unless it's to protect the bottom of the cabinet from scratching? Mine a melamine (blumbox type of drawers) so that's not an issue)

I have the pegboard and pegs in my dish drawer and love them. How's that for conflicting opinions?

Most organizers can be installed after the fact and it may be more cost effective to do so. A lot of people opt for almost all drawers these days, but I would plan on one cabinet with vertical spacers for the big cookie sheets, roasting pans, etc.

MizLizzie and nhbaskets, can you give your reasons for liking/not liking the pegboards for dishes? We that are still in the decision phase would like to know.

I clicked "like" on nhbaskets post. It's not that I don't like the pegboard, in fact I originally assumed I would use it. It's just that I found it to be totally unnecessary if the reason for it is to keep the dishes from sliding around. They don't.

I don't have anything in the drawers where I store my dishes, bowls and glasses. They don't move around. I've never had the drawer pegs but they sure seem unnecessary to me. I like not having pegs obstructing when I quickly unload the DW or reach in to grab something. I do have a drawer mat to cushion my glasses as I store them upside down and it seems like this would prevent chipping but, before I got the mat, I didn't have problems with the glasses sliding around.

I insist that all my drawer organizers be removable and washable. All it takes is one experience with mice in the house. No way would I want to be dealing with permanently installed ones made of a material that cannot be cleaned and sanitized.

I don't have any fitted in- drawer organizers but I have found the after market adjustable bamboo separators useful in my dishtowel and storage item (plastic wrap, foil, bags, containers) drawers. Also love the racks that allow me to store my pot lids and small baking dishes on their sides in the drawer, and larger baking pans/sheets on their sides above the frig.

I have a drawer knife block, cutlery inserts, tall platter organizer, a base cabinet pull-out spice unit modified just like the one pictured above, and a super Susan. The spice organizers are from Tupperware. You can order them on line from Target or WalMart, $11.00 each. They are not available in stores. Great if you are vertically challenged.

And

This is an extra deep drawer. We installed a couple of small pieces of wood around the sides of the drawer. We purchased a piece of nice plyboard from Lowe's, cut holes in it and sprayed the finish with a can of polyurethane. The utensil holders are stainless bain Maries. They cost maybe $10-$12 each. This organizer holds all of my long utensils and is right next to the range top. I just reach in for what I need.

I forgot to answer one of your questions. You can retrofit pretty much everything. The super Susan, base pull-out spice cabinet, tall tray storage and super deep drawer have to be pre planned.

My spice drawer is laid out just like autumn's (flat, rounded), but I got mine at IKEA. They work great.

We have 32 drawers, and half of them are 7" deep, which is some wasted space. I made some of them into compound drawers, with a shallower top drawer built in that you move back to expose the lower part. I might convert more of them, as they seem to work well.

Our spice drawer (for now) holds 100 square jars. They fit perfectly, so they stay put without any dividers. I'm going to put a piece of plywood in with each spot labeled, so when you take a bunch of spices out, you'll know where to return them to. The jars will be labeled on top so you can find what you need at a glance. We don't actually have 100 spices, so I may put in a divider to reduce the space a bit, or I could just leave it filled with a number of spares.

Designsavvy, I like the pegs because I feel my dishes are more secure and less apt to slide. I have service for 12, so the stacks are high, especially the cereal bowls which have two stacks. It's not the bottom plates that slide, it's more the stack that can move toward the top. After having the pegs in our old house, we went without in our new build for several months during which time I heard daily from DH that he missed the pegs (and drawer dividers). Finally got around to ordering online. No more complaints.

I wish I could have a pretty cabinet for my two cats' dishes. Unfortunately, my cats have....issues. They like to pickup any little thing off the floor and put in the water dish so that they can play in the water to get it out. :( I have they're bowl on a rimmed baking sheet in the laundry room. Bad kitties!

Thanks, nhbaskets. That looks nice. I was thinking my hubby could retrofit something similar for me. Also, we will finally have an IKEA in St. Louis opening by the end of September. So excited! I'm hoping they have some interior drawer organizers that may fit in some of my drawers.

mushcreek, where did you find square spice jars? Do you have pics of your spice drawer?

I'll have to take a pic. I got square 3.75 oz jars from specialtybottle.com. They don't have shaker tops for those, though. Specialty Bottle has all kinds of cool containers from a variety of materials and styles, and much cheaper than a local store. I think I paid $0.55 each for my jars.

keagle I am not sure if anyone mentioned it or not but I found it much better to wait until we were moved in and see where things landed before I went forward with drawer organizers - I purchased 3 from woodhollow (spice/bake, utensil and silverware). My silverware moved drawers no less than 3 times before it found it's permanent home. The first two drawers I tried just weren't comfortable. The utensil and spice/bake drawers were set from the get go and stayed but I had another utensil drawer that ended up moving to the pantry because they didn't get used hardly ever and were taking up valuable real estate in the kitchen. :) I am very glad that I hadn't ordered immediately since I ended up making adjustments in the first couple of months in the new kitchen.

We have some dishes in one of our bottom drawers (not full place settings but odds and ends kid stuff) and they really stay put pretty well. I have never noticed them sliding around to the point that it was bothersome. No mat or anything.

Having organized drawers (and closets) is one of my most favorite things about the spaces. I love opening my drawers and not having stuff shifting everywhere.

Sorry, been out of town. As sjh's says, the peg board was just not needed, and the pegs took up a surprising amount of space that I needed. I felt the pegs forced me into patterns of positioning things, and took away flexibility. And all I replaced it with was not exactly a rubber mat, but a sheet of that grippy stuff that you line shelves with. It was just enough grip to reassure me my china rims would not chip each other.

But it really is different strokes for different folks. I have my 12" spice pull left of cooktop drilled for utensil pots and love, love, love them. brdrl doesn't like his or hers, and homechef59 does.

Holy Moly that's a lot of spices!! What size drawer do you have them in?

Do you find that the jars keep the spices fresh? I like the square jars.

The drawer is 20-1/2" wide inside, and the jars are just slightly over 2", so they fit with a tiny amount of wiggle room. If I push them to one side, there's less than 1/4" gap. I haven't used them yet to see how well they work. The lids are very tight- once you think they are on, you can give them another 1/4 turn, and I'm sure they will be quite tight. I actually hope they loosen a bit with use, as I don't know if my wife has the grip strength to open them.

We keep our bulk spices in the freezer. We buy them from sources such as Penzey's, and try to buy a 6-12 month supply, although some things rarely get used. I make a lot of spice mixtures for different cuisines and BBQ, plus we wind up with things like 6 different varieties of salt. I made a quick list, and came up with about 80 different spices and mixtures, so it's not as crazy as it seems.

Filling and labeling is going to be a project! I have surgery coming up, and will be restricted to 'light duty' for as long as two months, so this is one of many projects I've lined up for that time. I have a P-Touch labeler which is fantastic, but the labels get expensive. I want to label the jar, the lid, and a board under the jar so we know where to put them back. I might line the bottom of the drawer with 2" wood squares which I can label, but still re-arrange should the need arise.

The drawer where I think I will use them is 21" outside (19-1/2" inside), so maybe I can get one less row. I have a labeler as well. I was going to do the lid, but didn't think about the jar as well. Makes sense. What if they got separated! Duh! I don't know that I would have that many spices, but maybe I can put a divider and store other things as well.

Whether you buy your spices in bulk in in little jars at the supermarket, keep in mind that you will have to transfer them to those little jars (sounds like that's worth it to mushcreek, it definitely wouldn't be worth the trouble to me).
