are these your things? Are you replacing the furniture? Is the paint gray or white? Please provide us with more directions?

The window treatments are very dated and don't work with the oak trim.

Your home is super neat and tidy (something you don't often see on Houzz) but you've got too many little things on the walls. Small items on large walls just don't work. Add a couple of big framed prints like this one from Pottery Barn would be great over your sofa.

Try some of your little wall stuff over the small table beneath the stairs. Those round pictures might work. Hang 'em low! Only about 2 or 3 inches over the table. If you try this please post pictures.

Start by removing all window treatments. I wouldn't normally recommend painting before everything else is in place but I think you should. Once the walls are painted, you'll have a sense of direction and can build from there. Here are some paint options. First one is Sherwin Williams Bunglehouse Blue and second one is Slate Tile. The wall under the step is painted Network Gray. Colors are never the same in person as they are on screen so make sure to pick up swatches and sample the colors first.

erikalym, could the TV be mounted on the stairway wall? Though that would place it lower than where it currently sits, the angle of view from the couch (where the remote currently sits :) is not a lot different -- other than turning right, instead of left. The two blue chairs and ottomans could sit in front of the beautiful window with a small table and lamp between; and (1) you would no longer be dealing with looking toward the sun to watch TV and (2) it would, in effect, remove the giant "pink elephant" in the room. (I don't mean that ugly! For decorating purposes, you know what I mean! :) We all watch TV and it does belong in our living rooms; yours is just not in a great location. I'm guessing it currently swivels toward the kitchen, but it appears that you would still have some view of it from the kitchen. You would need a narrow, low console below it.

The dining table could be turned parallel to the kitchen cabinets or, perhaps, perpendicular (if there is adequate walking space) and an attractive buffet/cabinet or hutch could be placed on the DR wall. A buffet could have a beautiful piece of colorful art above it, which would add color and interest in that area.

I do agree with other Houzzers that the smaller framed pieces would display better in a low grouping. It also appears that your pictures and wall items (i.e. over the couch and in the DR) are hung a little too high. I'm guessing someone will also suggest that lowering your DR light fixture to 30-36" above the table top will also be more pleasing.

Your window treatments do "date" your look. Though they soften and feminize the space, that can also be achieved with artwork and other decorating "touches."

Your home is beautiful. The kitchen is wonderful! Truly, it is the TV that seems to be the giant albatross. Moving it to the stair wall seems to be the best option I can see. Moving the blue chairs to that end of the living area also helps "honor" the fireplace.
