Japanese Cedar (cryptomeria) and Taxodium (bald cypress)

I'll second that.

Mike

Thanks for the help! I'm majorly disappointed to find out that the bald cypress is deciduous. I love it but really need an evergreen in the spot I'm thinking of. We don't see the Japanese Cypress around here all that much... I need to research to find out if it's as good of a choice as the Thuja Green Giant.

Third! I would bet the first is the Yoshino cultivar which is quite popular here in the southeast. The bald cypress also appears to be a cultivar to me, but I don't have a guess as to what kind.

Thanks Dean! I'll check out the Yoshino cultivar. We're looking for an evergreen to plant in part shade that could provide some year round privacy.

All of these become quite large trees (hence "Giant" in the name of the arborvitae), if you aren't operating on the scale of a park or estate you probably need something smaller. The bald cypress doesn't have to be a named selection just because it may look a little "different", if it does in fact vary from what many others look like it could just be an unnamed seedling variant.

I think Yoshino would be an excellent screening choice. Cryptomerias are often quite tolerant of shade, so I think they should work out for you. Having said that, though, the more sun, the faster and fuller they will grow.

A row of this or a similar type planted at the new convention center in a nearby town not that long ago are already bulging out of the planting area. As a general rule woody plants that develop rapidly go on to get big.

Thanks guys! :)

How do you guys tell the difference between bald cypress and dawn redwood?

The difference is the leaflets being alternate or opposite. In this case you can just make out that they are alternate, which is Taxodium.

David is talking about the needles on each twiglet-in bald cypress, each individual needle is not directly across from another needle on the opposing side of the twig, on dawn redwood, they are directly opposite each other.

a metasequoia looks NOTHING. like a taxodium ... in person ...

visit a local arboteum.. and find out ...

and yes.. its all about the needles... throw in the bark.. the trunk form ... etc ...

OK, maybe if you have a very well developed eye for it. I own a very large metasequoia, and a local arboretum does have some taxodium. I can see the difference in person, but the young ones look pretty similar, no? A young tree as in the picture is harder for me to tell the difference.

Bald cypress appears feathery with its thin foliage. Dawn redwood almost looks clunky in comparison. Its foliage is many times the thickness of Bald cypress.
