We purchased this home in The Keys last year after seeing only four photos online. It spoke to me. It is a very, um, eclectic piece of property which must have been built by a hippie/artist as a commune/ashram. Our neighbor told us it was, at one time, clothing-optional thus all of the heavy vegetation around the perimeter.

The property is one acre of tropical flora with more than two dozen different varieties of palm trees including upwards of 100 coconut palms. It is not on the water however, it has a swimming pool with waterfall (photo attached--yes, it is yellow with a red sun--or octopus--in the bottom) as well as a large tidal pond, with waterfall, on the other side of the property. The walking paths take you to the Meditation Pyramid and past the Tile Garden. We are still discovering “hearts” hidden in the gardens and carved into the cement (you know, the “peace and love” kind).

The house itself is a two story octagonal pole house. Each room was treated as an art project--tile mosaic counter top and bathtub, 3 outdoor showers, wall murals, oddly placed aquariums, hidden closet behind a bookcase, coral rock wall shower, lots of (really) brightly painted walls. We think the downstairs, which is broken up into two separate apartments or guestrooms, was used as a B&B as we’ve had people come to the gate and ask if the rooms are still available to rent (they’re not).

The real guestroom is the poolside Cabana. Also a pole building, with its own deck and mosaic tiled bathroom, not to be confused with the Poolhouse with bathroom and outdoor shower.

It just goes on and on. I am spending a great deal of time on Houzz looking for ideas to renovate while maintaining some of the quirkiness that attracted me to it in the first place. It is actually in very good shape considereding it had been vacant for more than a year. We have a house sitter now living in the main house taking care of the property until we get down there in 21 months, 25 days...but who's counting!
