Layout help - what am I doing wrong?

Our living room shape is just plain awkward, and creating a layout for this huge space has proven to be quite difficult.

The open space by the "bar" is the most frustrating to me since we can't seem to find a decent table that looks right. Am I thinking about that space incorrectly? How would you arrange the furniture in this long and awkward room? And your advice on creating a flow from this space to the kitchen?

One quick question presents itself: isn't that spiffy red chandelier supposed to be hanging over a dining table? Usually that's what "transitions" the living to the eating area in a long narrow house like this, whether or not you put stools at the bar (not sure I would). I'm not sure that your arm chair and ottoman are scaled quite right to allow passage down the room...

I would guess that some (most?) people would put a TV on a console in that corner, unless there's a family room someplace else. Others would put an entry console table with a lamp and a dish or something for keys, and then nothing else or maybe a plant in the corner (or a tall umbrella stand, etc.). Art or mirror over it. Others might put a hutch or something full of things they want to show off, or a low chest with blankets or something.

Given how narrow your space is at that point, I wouldn't put anything angled or that sticks out -- honestly, a narrow table with a piece of art over it seems most natural.

yep, we are currently looking for a table to put there. the stools are being re upholstered and sold. the piece of furniture in the front corner typically holds our tv, but had temporarily been moved, and that stand will be sold as well.

I agree with you that the armchair and ottoman are a but big for that space. I like it, but I'm rotten at figuring out how to arrange those couches and the chair and ottoman.

1-Switch the positions of the couches. Center the large couch under the window.

2- Position the couches closer than they are now. The arms should be kissing distance.

The new position will bring the living area closer to the Bay window allowing you more space in the dining room area. It will also make the larger couch complement the size of the window

3- Put the end tables right next to the couches where they can function as a place to put a glass, phone or book down.

4-Put a table lamp on the red end table. Keep the standing lamp in the corner where it is. Lighting corners of a room make the space look larger.

5- Adjust your art work and rug accordingly.

See how close the couches are in this floor plan? That closeness will make conversation more intimate. Kissing distance.

Looks like the easy chair gets a lot of use. That should be positioned so the TV is easy to see. I have moved it to the window where there is room for it and the ottoman. I would put a 36" pedestal table next to it for a lamp, room for beverages or a plate of snacks.

I have moved the loveseat so that it creates a division between your living room and dining room. Get a round table and place the chairs on the diagonal for more room The median stand should stay square to the wall. Angle the TV itself or mount it on an adjustable wall bracket from Costco or IKEA.
