Lavender seems mighty tough to me and if you're buying them in containers then they can be planted at any time. But I have also been told that when we have super high heat most plants go dormant. If you're as hot as we are in Raleigh NC then you might want to wait til things cool down. I know I normally take cuttings of it in the fall and they seem to root better and grow over the winter.

Thanks John. I will wait til the end of September. It should be a little cooler by then. You root lavender by cuttings? WOW. I heard it's really hard to root that way. Thank you, mabey I can get some of it to root for me too. It's expensive buying a lot of plants.

I treat them like Rosemary (they're related). Woody stemmed cuttings in the fall. Stick them a couple of inches down into sterile media in a tall pot with only 3 inches of media in the bottom. Use the walls of the pot to support the cutting (keep the cuttings bushy and wide, snip off the tips). Set them somewhere completely out of the way. Ignore them until April. When they first start to root the roots are fragile and if you bump the plant or knock it around you might break them. That's why I put them in tall pots and let the side walls keep them protected. I cannot grow lavender in the ground. It has to be in a raised bed over a foot tall with the soil blended with sand and gravel - a little bit of sand and equal parts soil and gravel.
