Need Help Replacing Wood Burning Fireplace with Woodstove

These photo's are terrible, sorry. They're from a showing of a house we're in the midst of purchasing. It needs a lot of work.

This 3 sided fireplace needs to be completely ripped out for safety reasons. We're planning to replace it with a wood stove.

The fireplace currently sits in the inside of a L between the formal dining room and the large living room.

Any ideas or tips regarding placement and look. We're keeping pine trim and floors and painting everything else out white. It is a house in 30 acres of bush. I would like to go British Cottage feel with enough modern/Scandinavian thrown in to keep it fresh.

You appear to have a baby who will soon be todding around and a wood stove in that location would be a disaster waiting to happen if you are putting one in I would suggest on a wall with the ability to fence it off not in walkway. This one is kind of a good idea where the firebox is elevatedand would bring in that scandavian vibe the other pic is just an attractive barrier . We had a wood stove in one of our houses I loved the heat from it but they are messy for sure

I would recommend you live with it for a few months until you get a better feel for how the spaces work together (or don't!) for your lifestyle, where the light falls at different times of the day and the year, and so on.

In he meantime, put together some ideabooks with features that you love, or hate, make comments to remind yourself of why you saved them too.

As far as wood stoves go, you can't go wrong with Jotul. Quality, efficient, and handsome. Don't forget to plan where you put the wood stove for ease of access for wood storage! Lugging logs and cleaning up afterwards gets very dull very fast.

i only know how to get rid of wood stoves, sorry. i understand that your fireplace isnt functional, but make sure you love woodstoves.

I don't know why people are down on wood stoves. Maybe it depends where you live. Without a wood stove, we would be cold all winter. And winter lasts 6 months. They sell gates to put around the stove to protect small children. I know they make stoves that insert into a fireplace. Id consult a stove sale place to see what they recommend.

I live in ND and have no wood stove and am never cold. Not sure where you live but wood stoves are dangerous.

What is the safety issue with the current fireplace? What kind of wood stove are you thinking about because I'm just not seeing how you are working a typical wood stove into that space?

That whole wall that the fireplace is in will come right out. Opening up the living room and dining room. A wood stove would either float or go against a wall in that corner.

I live in the Ottawa Valley where we use our woodstove's and furnaces about 6-8 months per year! I know they are messy but they are very, very necessary. They can also look beautiful, cozy and modern (depending on how they're done). This would actually be the second wood stove in this house. the other woodstove is small and not central to the house. Replacing this fireplace with a woodstove is economical in terms of heating the house (not running a propane furnace exclusively, but supplementing with wood burning heat) and in terms of fixing this fireplace (cheaper to rip out the fireplace and put in a woodstove then to replace the fireplace).

In reality you have a big ol' woodbox beside so you're not going out into the bitter snow every few hours, and chunks of wood meandirt, dust etc. But with a good system the mess is minimized.
