Weed identification

Help! Anyone have any idea? Generally grows in damp shady spots in the garden, but over winter it has spread across most of my small garden. Periodically I hoe it up and it comes up in sheets like this and unless I remove the whole sheet with quite a bit of topsoil attached, it simply grows back.

It's a liverwort. Not a vascular plant. More like a moss. As you notice, they generally grow in damp, shady places where not much else will grow. Identification of the species is a job for a specialist.

If it is growing on your garden you need to address drainage and shade. Liverworts are symptomatic of poor growing conditions for most plants.
