I would say bigger garage lanterns, more colorful and varied plantings, a colored front door would help. I am not sure muntins in a traditional pattern are quite right for your contemporary house, although they would add some detail.

Thanks so much for your help. I had the same concern about the shutters. So, what do you think about my adding craftsman-style features, such as corbels and columns--perhaps three columns evenly spaced along the front and one at the porch to identify the entry? And I thought about using craftsman-style muntins, too, to continue that theme, along with blocky black craftsman-style lanterns for the garage and entry. Landscaper is coming this afternoon.

What color would you suggest for the window trim? Could I go with a dark green or burgundy for the window trim? Should I leave any white along the window frames?

I think you could add a more substantial single column, but it would still be best in a contemporary style. The overall shape and the personality of this house are pretty far from craftsman so adding details in a different style could be problematic.

I agree with palimpsest, keep the changes in line with the existing style of the house. I think it needs some landscaping.

Could you work on landscaping that would add some height variations? It would be nice to break up all the horizontal lines. Could you plant a tallish tree--maybe something that would sometimes have color, does crepe myrtle grow in your region? Or bradford pear?--to the left of the front door? (My left, looking at the house.) It wouldn't have to be tall when you plant it, of course, but would grow.

You could balance that with a shorter tree/tall shrub on the garage side. Maybe a japanese maple?

To draw attention to the front door and add more lines and depth, what about curving the walkway out into the yard, or maybe even put in a courtyard that you could surround with plantings or containers.

And I think a rich accent color would be awesome. Red, or a turquoise-y blue. Is that a stormdoor on the front door? Would you be up for removing it and painting the front door? You could use the same color for great big flower pots, in summer plantings, and maybe on big lantern on either side of the garage. (I'm all about landscaping these days, even though I am the Bringer of Death to Living Plants. But I'm getting a sprinkler system this spring, and I've mastered drip irrigation for container plants, so I'm having a burst of confidence that my house won't always look like the land where plants go to die.)
