You're killing me, Shiloh

Some of you may remember a few months ago when I posted this island bookcase, which had come in with a curved detail on the top.

I got some wonderful feedback here (thanks again!) but in the end we decided to have the cabinet re-made with the straight top. I just couldn't get over it and it was worth it to me. This is a custom paint color with inset panels on the side, so it's a $1,700 cabinet (eek). My KD split the cost with me since it was kind of a misunderstanding that lead to it being ordered with the curve.

The replacement cabinet came in but it had some imperfections. A few deeper nicks on the front, and the bottom shelf/panel didn't line up, leaving a pretty large gap that to me was unacceptable (especially now that I know how much this cabinet cost). My KD contacted Shiloh who agreed to re-make the replacement cabinet.

Throughout our renovation, Shiloh has sent me many damaged cabinets. Probably 7 or 8 total. And the imperfections were glaring. Things where I was absolutely shocked that they came to me that way; clearly no one had really given them a thorough (or even a non-thorough) inspection before they left the factory. Here is an example:

This is the bottom of an upper cabinet and that nick is deep and probably about an inch long. I ended up deciding to do a light rail at the last minute, which covered this up, but Shiloh still had to replace 4 or 5 cabinets with equally glaring imperfections (I don't have pictures of those). I only live a couple of hours from the Shiloh factory in Missouri, so if they were damaged in transit I would be very surprised.

Yesterday my contractor came to install the second replacement bookshelf cabinet and I had a feeling it would also have some flaws. Sure enough, I was right. It also has a gap on the bottom. It's very noticeable to me. It's currently in my dimly-lit garage so I don't have a picture but it's much bigger than the current one. It's about a 1/2" gap. We are actually going backwards here. To note, the original cabinet with the curved top did NOT have this gap on the bottom shelf, so I know it's not supposed to be that way (also, common sense would tell me this, but there's my proof).

I actually really love my Shiloh cabinets now that they are (almost) completely installed and the imperfect ones replaced. I think they are really beautiful and the final quality is great. I just can't believe that they keep sending me damaged cabinets. I really don't think I'm being too picky (my contractor says I'm not at all). Has anyone had similar issues with Shiloh? I realize all kitchen projects will probably have a damaged cabinet or two but this just seems ridiculous to me. We paid over $30k for our cabinets so I want them to be (reasonably) perfect. The Kitchen Place- I know you do a lot of business with Shiloh; are you seeing any similar issues with quality control?

That is unfortunate and disappointing. Mine have been in for a year now but I didn't experience any of that. I had one cabinet come incorrectly with a center stile vs. a butt door but they sent a new one immediately. I didn't even notice that until install and they had been sitting for a month by then. That was it and there was no question or delay in replacement even given the time lapse.

Nobody with Shiloh is having/had any issues? Really? It's just me?!

Most of the damage I've encountered in factory cabinets generally came from either shipping or handling, not from the company itself. Is there some reason to think it's the cabinet company and not the shippers?

If it makes you feel better I prefer your cabinet with the straight top as well! I've never dealt with Shiloh but have read a lot of good things about them. I would consider filing a claim with shipping, maybe?

Side note, but do they not offer clear shelf clips or a color that blends better, though? Those really stand out to me!!!

I think the clips are just in place to hold the shelves during shipping...they are removable...

Sorry to hear about the damage. I think the cabinet looks great from straight on. The bead detail is very nice.

I haven't had any issues like that. I had one client years ago that asked for a professional touch up. His only issues were microscopic...he followed around my touch up pro with a magnifying glass. True story. From now on, if someone has to get out a magnifying glass, then there isn't an issue.

I'm sorry about your dings....I hope this is an isolated incident.

Ps. Who installed them? Is it possible the dings happened during installation? Btw...especially with WHITE, expect a minor touch up or two after installation.

Amber & Jubilante- those plastic clips are necessary to hold the shelves in place. I agree I wish they blended in a bit better. I have a few sets so I may play around with trying to paint them (my color is from Sherwin-Williams so I can easily get some).

Oh my goodness, I have boxes of those clips! I am having a major facepalm moment that I didn't think to use them on the bookshelf; they are used on all of our other cabinets. Thank you! I blame my kids for ruining my brain. :)

It looks so much better without the arch. I'm sorry you've had delays, I know it must be frustrating, but it'll be worth it in the end.

Hope you get your beautiful kitchen finished soon. The bookcase shelf clips are different than the cabinets ones to keep the shelves from sliding out since their isn't a face frame on the bookcase cabinet. The other clips should still work since the books are heavy enough to keep the shelf in place. Just a thought.

The nicks could be the shipper. And you can get shipping damage just loading the truck, it doesn't matter how far it's going.

But the gap? That's the manufacturer. There's no way the shipper cut that groove out of the side of the cabinet.

Did you ever do a reveal?

Oh gosh don't get me started! I really like my cabinets, but it's been awful! I have so many nics, dings, & paint chipped off! They have replaced the doors and draw doors that were damaged, but then 3 of those came in damaged too! The boxes were not busted or smashed either. These doors were rapped in a foam that was like vacuum sealed also. I'm still waiting on those!

Just in general when I was cleaning my cabinets for the first time there were lines in the paint on the inside of door. Also looked like stuff under the paint. Like if you painted your nail with a thread on it. These are not spots from shipping or installation.

I don't feel like I'm being to picky, so I feel your pain! I don't know what to do either. Im afraid that my cabinets will just start chipping away. I'm thinking of contacting Shiloh and asking them to send a rep out, but I'm not sure how that goes! Do you think they would? I can post pics if anyone is interested! Thanks for posting this thread. I've been looking and thought I was the only one!

We would like pictures. Maybe sharing more problems like this with forums and letting Shiloh know this issue is being shared, will have them step up their quality control.

Thank you Susanlynn! I will post some pics later.

Here are some pics! 1 image is back of cabinet door, 2 image is a replacement door on pantry, 3 image is inside trash door, 4 image is a drawer door (it's getting replaced), 5 image pantry doors (getting replaced but came in damaged). These are just the ones that stick out at me this morning! Thanks again!

Oh those are horrible. I'd be upset too. I hope that you are able to get them all replaced. I wouldn't be happy with any of those issues.

Ditto what edenaurora said. Best wishes on getting this resolved quickly without much fuss. Please let us know if Shiloh makes it right for you.

Very poor quality control. Sorry you both are going through this headache. I really hope Shiloh comes through for you.

Thank you all for your support! This has all been so disappointing. I feel like everyone thinks I'm being petty/picky! They do scratch easy! My husband accidentally picked paint off a corner before we got handles:(

I'd be far from happy. Those doors are soooo unexceptable

I know this is an old post, and I hope you respond, but how are they holding up? Is the finish chipping? We are considering them.

    And what is your countertop?

I had Shiloh cabinets installed in my kitchen in June 2016. NONE arrived with any damage at all! We did have to replace a few cabinets - KD made a mistake in ordering them, and Shiloh was very helpful to get us a 3 week turnaround. Mine are all painted cabinets as well.

I watched the installer's helper remove the packaging in which they arrived - my goodness, but these cabinets were VERY well packaged, thus no damage.

I'm sorry you had this experience but it was in no way similar to mine! I highly recommend Shiloh and my KD/kitchen company says they rarely ever have a problem with this company. They also sell Mouser (much more expensive), and said that in the past, they have dropped lines where there were quality/packaging problems - too much of a hassle for the company.

Nearly 2 years later, I still love my cabinets and their quality. I did NOT do the upgrade to Blum slides and have found the ones that Shiloh uses as standard are excellent, just as my KD said they would be.
