Put it the long way (as in 2nd picture), no one should have their back to the door or the window when seated at the table.

That's three for pic #2! I'd also do something to improve the view out that beautiful window, maybe tall plants in planters?

My vote is for #2; the #1 placement stops your eye and seems awkward to me.

long way. how committed are you to these benches? impossible to get into the middle seat, impossible to sit on for more than 10 min. best dieting aid ever...how about have seats on one side bench on the other?

I love the second option. Especially when serving guests it'll be so much easier to quickly access each place setting. Love the benches :)
