Dishwasher detergent with phosphates !!!

Noticed on another post from Larsi that people are looking for dishwasher detergent with phosphates. I found one a couple of years ago and have been using it since with good results. Its called Bubble Bandit. Stupid name I know but it is still available. It is mail order only. They have their own web site or you can order it through Amazon. I don't know how they are getting around the phosphate ban but it is loaded with phosphates just like the old cascade. It only comes in powder form however.

Just checked the website. Its bubblebandit.com. Its very informative. They now have trial size available if you don't want to fully commit. I also checked out Amazon and it still available there.

I have been thinking of ordering this for awhile, I'm going to try Mich's recipe 1'st...I love phosphates but I need a chloranated detergent with my old machine.

WOW....Thanks Tideman_59. I am not sure if my German Somat 10 Tabs my family brings or mails to me from Germany have Phosphates (I think they do)...but if they do not, they work as good or better than Phosphate laden dishwasher detergent. They are hands down the best I have ever used!!

I wonder how Bubble Bandit gets around the Phosphate ban? Isn't it 50 state mandatory by now?

All Somat detergents have over 30% phosphates in them, as do most Germany dishwasher detergents.

30% Alex??? WOW....no wonder my Somat 10 Tabs are the best thing in the whole world!!!

I have to say though I am very surprised Germany allows this though. I know Sweden has banned phosphates, and Germany is very eco conscious and "green".

Phosphates must be gone from DW detergent by 2017...

@Larsi, keep in mind... here in the United States. Detergent manufacturers we're only required to list "phosphorus content" which, is just a ingredient of STPP. Like Cascade Powder would have "7.0% Phosphorus" which is about 28% Sodium TripolyPhosphate in the mix.

Most companies wouldn't list the actual Phosphates in the ingredients list, because... it's non-toxic, if ingested. Look at your bottles of Coke & boxes of Cheerios.

European Dishwasher Detergent's, are manufactured typically with about the same amount of Phosphate, as we had here, pre-ban.

    On the other hand...

I think I'd be scared to use a detergent with 30% Phosphorus... I think it'd be a little too strong ;) lol

Yup, every box of dishwasher detergent here says > 30% Phosphate. I'm currently using one without phosphate; then again, all our dishwashers have softeners in them.

That settles it ..I'm ordering Somat10.

Just a "heads-up" on Bubble Bandit; it doesn't contain enzymes. I bought it to use in my Miele Professional dishwasher but was rather disappointed in the results. Traces of dried on food and peanut butter on table knives remained after the "Universal" cycle. Using Cascade™ or Finish™ leaves nothing behind.

MamaP...I do not think you can order Somat10 tabs in the USA. Let me know if you find them. If not, I can mail you some to try and enjoy!! I have never used better, ever!!!!

@markb, is that like the "intensive" cycle?

I have bags of Bubble Bandit at home. But... I've only done about a week of dishwasher loads, with one bag. With that said.. I was pretty impressed with how well it cleaned. :-)

It really does make glasses & silverware shiny, that's for sure. Although, I do remember contacting them, and being told it's Chlorine Based.

@whirlpool_trainee, I remember hearing something about a phosphate phaseout, for the EU in 2016. What do you know about it?

@whirlpool_trainee, I NEVER load my Bosch like that. I always, and I mean always, loosely load everything. In your case though, it looks like everything can still reach the water spray, but... I could never load like that. I'd be worried, my dishes wouldn't be clean, lol.

It's pretty cool seeing that video though. It's obvious your Siemens/Bosch, works well with Phosphated Detergent's. :-)

ME two...lol..I only have one sprayer arm

My DW has 3 sprayer arms...and I can load that puppy FULL, and everything nook & cranny of every item is clean, shiny and polished!!!

@Larsi... I never pegged you as the overloader type, lol :-)

@whirlpooltrainee Is the phosphate ban, just for Germany or for all of the EU?

Mitch....I do not usually overload, and even when I do it's still somewhat organized ;)

My DW is set to begin at 10:45pm...It's all loaded up. Eww, dirty dishes! LOL Only on our forum, would I share a pic like this!!

Mitch - the ban is for all of Europe.

Larsi - what a cute little load in there. I might even be willing to switch my dishwasher on for that: on the 55 min. 149°F Quick Wash cycle. :p

@Larsi, that's not overloaded. It's perfect, and your dishes aren't even that dirty going in, lol. Although, I'd probably turn the colander, upside down.

On another note... is that All-Clad? Your pans are absolutely beautiful. I have a set of stainless-steel Calpahalon Contemporary, and I love them. Also have a few random Cuisinart tri-plys that I use on occasion.

I really hate non-stick pans. Always felt that some of the non-stick gets into the food.. and that can't be healthy or safe. I'll stop rambling now :P lol.

Curious, what's the Silit cookware like? :-)

    @whirlpool_trainee, I guess... I'll be ordering more Somat & Fairy Tabs. ;)

I think I recall the Germans revolting over one previous phosphate ban. I wonder how they'll react to this one. I think over there, a lot of people don't pre-wash like us american's. I could see a ton of mum's getting really mad... over the results.

The most recent test of phosphate-free detergents included some good products. I am using the no.1 rated tabs and they clean really well, even if the dishwasher is properly loaded like in my video and using the Speed Perfect option (1:19 hrs. cycle).

Our consumer magazine did an online survey of 950 people: 720 said they would change to phosphate-free products now. I was surprised, I must say. The best tabs used methylglycinediacetic acid in place of phosphates.

@ Laundry Mitch....with Miele (as one should do with all dishwasher) you scrape, but DO NOT Pre-Rinse!

The colander is All-Clad, and not turned upside down, because then water pools and forms either in the bottom or around the edge. A colander on it's side gets cleaned the best, IMO!

Silit is one of my fav German brands. The majority of my cookware is LeCreuset, Demeyere from Belgium and Ruffoni from Italy. Also have two pieces of high quality non-stick from Switzerland...Swiss Diamond. NS cookwares should be used for eggs and omelettes only!

Mitch, The "Universal" cycle is europe's version of "Normal." As for cleaning, if things were pre rinsed (like those peanut butter encrusted knives) it did a decent job. I'm not really sure why they include chlorine in the formulation. It's only a trace amount and over time I noticed the buildup of stains in coffee cups. Maybe in a typical long cycle residential machine it would work well. But my "Universal" cycle is only a little over thirty minutes and it didn't work well for me. When I use Cascade™ or Finish™, everything is clean, every time.

I found automatic dishwasher detergent today, with phosphates!! Cannot find the date but the boxes are in perfect condition and the detergent is loose and smells good. It's 'Best Choice' brand and was on a shelf with lots of other boxes. I hope it's still good. These are going in Ziplocs. Treasure Hunts are so damn much fun!!!

    Hahaha...SCORE!!! Congrats Jean. Enjoy.

Mitch and Larsi--I know this threads about d/w det,, but I had to add in about the cookware specifically non-stick. I read long ago that the coating does leach into the food! YUCK. I started buying ceramic non sticks. GreenPan. They are really, really nice!

@miami miami. I was never quite too sure, if it did or not. Good to know. I just remember... telling myself... "This can't be safe. I mean, this stupid coating.. flakes off with the slightest scrape, what in the world is it doing to the food?"... Eventually, I got rid of every single onE of those stupid pans. Stainless Steel & (or better yet) Cast Iron makes much better, safer choices, imo.

They now even make Le Creuset (Cast Iron) that can go INTO the dishwasher :D How cool is that? ;)

Oh Le Creuset! I have to buy those piece by piece as you know they are crazy exp., but worth it! I have asked for them as gifts for diff occasions but my hub says he feels like a jerk buying me kitchen and house stuff for gifts.lol. So I will add little by little. I am however teflon free now in my kitchen and pretty close to plastic free too. (those plastic utensils leach out toxins too) I still keep some plastic around for my little ones (plates, cups, lunch containers), but cooking utensils--gone!

    @Jean. What a cool find :D

I tried to Google "Best Choice" and didn't really find that much. But... I'm going to take a wild stab here, and assume it was made by Huish/Sun and is probably Enzyme powered. 5.3% Phosphrous ... and very comparable to old Cascade Complete Powder, or as Miami Miami remember's Sun Sations :D

@miami miami, just make sure... none of that plastic stuff, goes into the microwave. That's like guaranteed leaching, from what I've been told.

Hove to show off my cast iron skillet, it never goes in a dishwasher and is treated everytime I use it which is a lot, it was my moms, and her moms..

Mitch-Best Choice is "proudly distributed by Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc. KC,KS;" same enzyme based powder and 5.3% phosphorous-correct!! I believe that store had the Sun Sations as well PLUS I found a yellow jug of Cascade with phosphates from 1995 at a flea market!

Jean - Where did you find the Best Choice detergent? I am in the KC, KS area, I need to find it!

LetsGoBlues-Tilton's in Oakland neighborhood in Topeka,KS. Cascade is at Boyle's (Joyland) Flea Market in Topeka,KS. Tilton's is a old, and I mean old IGA. Lots of boxes left. I want to scour KC so bad but I haven't had a chance!

@Jean... was the Sun Sations, a blue box? ;)

And please tell me you grabbed that jug of Cascade ;)

@Jean... exactly how many boxes, we're left? ;) That's a amazing dishwasher detergent.

Mitch-Sun Sations was in a yellow bottle. I would say at least 14 boxes left if not more. Left the Cascade at the FLea Market. Oh no LetsGoBLues and I will be in Boyles parking lot in the morning racing in to grab it!!

best choice dishwasher detergent boxes-14 at least. SunSations Bottles 6 or 7

Jean - I wish! I am in southern Johnson County, and unfortunately I won't be out to Topeka any time soon. I need to check my old grocery store for any goodies. Jean, you better get your big purse!! :)

LetsGo-I have driven past this store a half dozen or more times in the last several months and it never dawned on me to go in and look-especially since the only reason I was even in that neighborhood was to get the Ariel from Mexico! DUH!! Just look for old neighborhood stores or ask around. KC and surrounding areas has to have a few of these! Good Luck!!
