Exposed spray foam as ceiling?

We recently purchased a cottage and the previous owners enclosed a porch with a peaked roof. The walls were insulated but the plywood roofing material was left exposed, nails and all. The room is not heated. It is unbearably warm in summer even with windows open and fans running. We like the rustic look of exposed trusses, but want the room to be more usable. A handyman told us he had seen spray foam insulation used between the 2x4s. It was evened up with their edges and then painted and became the ceiling. Has anyone heard of this or had any experience in such an application? Thanks!
