April Fresh Downy changed AGAIN!!!!!

last modified: 10 years ago

I picked up a big bottle of April Fresh Downy today at Target, just because it was on Sale, and I had a $5 off Target coupon.

DAMN P&G....if you are going to go to the trouble, time and expense of re-packaging, re-naming and changing the scent, why not just make it the scent that thousands of Downy fans want?! Classic April Fresh.

The good news about the new change...Colour and consistency are like old, classic Downy and some of that sickly sweet-tart cotton candy smell is reduced.

The bad news....April Fresh is more like perfume or cologne after washing & drying. I've done two loads now using the "new" Fabric Conditioner, Fabric Protect April Fresh Downy...and when taking the clothes out of the dryer, they do not smell like classic AF Downy, nor the sweet-tart Downy we all hate. The laundry now has a faint but prominent perfume/cologne smell...like perfume that was sprayed on clothes, and has been there all day. WTF is wrong with P&G??

Not overly offensive (but oh SO not great), but not what I want & I do not love it. I am SO mad at P&G once again!! I think they are going to give me high blood pressure!!! :-o

You know, when I read the reviews of these newer scents, people just gush over them. I really have no desire to walk in a laundry room that smells like Bath and Body Works, but obviously a good portion of the general public does. I just hope Henkel makes enough of a dent in P&Gs market share that maybe they rethink their strategy a bit. Candles, body wash, room spray, detergent..its too much!

Well if the Persil at WM is what you are hoping will change P&G I doubt it,at least from my standpoint. As much as I despise some of their scents, that Persil is AWFUL. Just Awful IMO. Way too loud and just not good.

Larsi, larsi, larsi how can I get you to try some Mrs. Meyers FS? They have it at Target. There must be a fragrance you will love it.

elcamino- Everything smells like Bath & Body Works now! Dragonfruit dishwasher detergent, bugglegum deoderant. Blech! The cleaning isle smells like a sorority or an Avon lady. I feel like I can use natural products with no remaining scent or smell like one of my son's girlfriends. I loved the smell of fresh laundry and now I'm gagged by other people's in public. It's weird that everyone is going "green" but dousing themselves in more weird chemical scents at the same time.

Mama, maybe by mixing it (Persil Pearls with Tide) the pearls don't leave the stench that most of us get.

I've made no bones about not being able to stand the synthetic fragrances or the sickening sweet ones. I can't stand the candles, glade, or car wash fragrances either. "Morning Mist" isn't real.

Don't see what's wrong with essential oil fragrances -- herbals or florals -- but I expect they are too expensive to be used in mass market laundry detergents.

American Persil, btw is made by the Dial company which Henkel owns. Dial makes Purex, Fels Naptha, Zout, Borax and Soft Scrub. They don't get great ratings from the greenies. Most of whatwe're using don't.

Essential oils are much more expensive and don't have much of a shelf life. I understand the need for artificial fragrances I just hate how simple and cheap the common fragrances have become. Very 1 note, sweet, food like fragrances that sour quickly and clash with more complex fragrances. Original Tide always reminded me of aerosol Aqua Net. Not my favorite but a much more complex scent than Apple Mango Tango. Original Downy had a complex fragrance as well. A definable base, middle and top note as good scents do. I have no doubt that simple scents are much easier and cost effective to produce and get to stay.

I wonder if it's just a changing market. It would be interesting if someone knew about perfumes and how that market has shifted. Expect the millenials are into different fragrances judging from what's at Sephora.

@rococogurl, check Larsi's Tide Tablets thread. I was just talking about that, last night.

Remember when Angel perfume hit the market and suddenly everything with a smell turned sickly sweet? In the last 1-2 years, the trend is to smell like men's cologne. Candles, AXE and other body washes, even the scents they spray in retail stores have that patchouli/vanilla/oud like base (see Tide Ultra).

Some of us... don't want to walk around, smelling like Summer Bubble Gum Incense Delight W/ Scent Pearls though. Personally, only like a *few* Men's Cologne's, but I'd never want MY clothes smelling like that.

While.. I enjoy *some* aromatherapy from time to time. It can't be good, for us.. to be around 24/7.

Summer Bubble Gum Incense Delight? Omg that is Fantastic! I'll only use it if it leaves sparkles on my clothes though...

I wear a little fragrance each day....a little bit. LOL...Angel. Yes, Angel. I have been wearing it since 1993, before it was even sold in the USA. And Tom Ford Tabacco Vanille....truly amazing. Both fragrances only require a conservative amt. Just a hint, a whiff!! Love!!! :)

My husband wears Angel. Hands down my favorite male scent! Smallest amount for best results. My fabric softner of the week is Angel fragrance oil mixed with Downy free FS.

I don’t understand why they changed the original April Fresh scent in the first place. I will never use that again!!! Way too strong and does NOT smell good one bit!!!! Smells like a bottle of damn perfume....gross
