You are very busy with your three little ones! I understand your need for having pretty spaces to enjoy. The first thing that I notice is that everything is dark brown. Also, I see only one lamp. Lamp light is so much less harsh than overhead lights.

It appears that you having a changing area behind the sofa. Could you add a small double door cabinet beside it? Craigslist often has such things that are very inexpensive. It may cover the little window.....but it would be a temporary storage area for toys, blankets, etc.

Try adding a short bookcase with baskets for storage. With three kids under 3, there will be more and more stuff for the next ten years. Try adding some color with new throws and new pillows, washable, of course.

You have a nice big room with wonderful windows. It is large enough that you can divide it into 2 distinct spaces. One is a conversation and TV area, the other a play area.

For the conversation/TV area, rotate the TV stand so that it is flat on the wall, beside the fireplace. Don't worry about it covering the window. Remove the picture you have there, and the floor vases. Move the sofa closer to the TV, and slide it as close to the window as feels comfortable. (You'll need to remove the bench from in front of the window.) Don't know whether you really need the end table, try living without it, since you have the coffee table. Place your rocking chair and footstool facing the 3-window wall, or angled towards the TV a bit. It will be in front of the fireplace which is fine.

Behind the TV area will be your children's area, which is now big enough to be inviting for them. Consolidate all the toys and children's items there. Can the cabinet between the stairs and kitchen door be used there (backing on to the sofa) for storage? You may need to buy more closed storage.

Do not have dimensions, but try this arrangement. Didn't see partim's post, but may be similar.

A new .floor lamp behind chair. None of these are expensive additions and will make a big difference in the room.

You said the room looks plain. If you mean that there is not a lot of color, I agree.

Your room is large with high contrast. By that I mean the dark window frames and dark sofa, with the light walls and floor. Don't try to add color with small pops of color here and there - you need to go large, and with a consistent color throughout. Is there color in adjacent rooms that you want to repeat? If not, I always love a dusty blue with brown and white/cream.

I'd start with a picture on your fireplace mantel that has a lot of that blue in it. It should be about 2/3 the width of your fireplace. (that's big!) Remove everything else from the mantel. Add the same color in pillows (larger than the ones you have now, at least 20" square) and a throw if you use it. If you choose painted furniture for the childrens' storage, you can repeat the color again.

I think this room would look great painted a pale blue-gray.

Your current decorative items (candles, etc.) are quite small and don't have the impact that you need in this lovely room. Go big!

I love all the suugestions! Thank you. The idea of dividing the room into two separate areas is great. Our current tv stand is a corner stand so it cannot be moved to sit flat against the wall. I could however move the black cabinet and use it as a tv stand. (I am referring to the black cabinet shown in picture #1). If I were to do this, what would you recommend I put in its place? That space is about 8 ft in length. Currently, although the room is quite large, it tends to feel cramped so I want to try not to add too many more large pieces. Suggestions?

That's a great idea to use that black cabinet. Perhaps another console for that wall, but not quite so heavy. More open will give the illusion of more space.

This is 48" do you need the storage that you had in other cabinet and is 48" long enough?

The black cabinet is too tall. You don't want to have to crick your neck to look at the TV. (Chiropractor bills add up!) And if it's too high and you end up moving the sofa back to view more comfortably, then you lose space in the play area.

The middle of your screen should be at or slightly below eye level from your viewing position. Sit on your couch and measure.

The stand will look best if it is at least 2 feed wider than your TV.

I'm a big believer in trying things out before you buy something new. I'd test the new room arrangement by moving the corner unit over, and rotating the TV on the stand. It will look a bit funny but it will let you test out the arrangement. Or do you have another lower piece of furniture that could be pressed into service, e.g. a coffee table would be about the right height. Ikea has some very reasonably prices TV stands (Besta, Lack).

This is an awesome room! I like the idea of a 2 door cupboard next to the changing table for storage. I would consider painting the room a warm yellow, and find a very large, bold yellow and red "Suzani" textile, which can be stretched and stapled over art stretchers and placed over the fireplace mantle. (You can find them on ebay for under $25). Then add some yellow and red textural pillows on the couch, maybe a skirted table next to the couch and a red slipcover for your bench under the sofa. In the future, I would consider adding a pretty area rug in front of the sofa. See some Suzani examples below. it is a great way to add a colorful punch for very little money.

If the cabinet is 30" tall, then IMO, it is not too tall. It will be fine. Measure the space on the left of FP to make sure cabinet will fit. Also that the TV will not extend out over the edges. Because the cabinet and TV will be between a wall and the FP, it is not important that it be 25% longer.

If you do use the existing cabinet for the TV, don't be in too much of a rush to fill the space it was in. Since you say the room tends to look cluttered, leave that wall free of furniture and art. It may look bare since you're used to seeing something there, so leave it for awhile and you may decide you prefer it unfurnished. Some blank space is restful to the eye, especially if the rest of the room has plenty going on.

I had 3 children under 5 years of age, so I am very familiar with the toy clutter. One thing that helped is that I did not let them play with all their toys at once. I divided the toys in half. One half was available at any time, and I hid the rest away (in bags under my bed LOL). Weekly, I switched them out. Much less clutter, and even more important, after the switch they enjoyed them as if they were new toys.
