hmmm perhaps set the furniture all at an angle to match the fireplace. couch facing, loveseat to one side, chair to the other, which ever way has more space there. then you can work out what tables and lamps you might need.

Is there going to be a tv in the room, tv is best at eye level,I recommend a console on the right wall of fireplace with a tv on it feather than over the fireplace

thank you so far with the advice. I can't change to sectional, and my husband wants the TV over fireplace. I am having it framed out like a picture to help. The floor size is 17' by 23, does that help any when it comes to the furniture looking big?

If you know the furniture measurements you can use painters tape on the floor to get size and placement

My suggestions: figure out what furniture you are primarily going to sit in to watch TV, and place that piece where it will be most comfortable to view the over-fireplace TV. When you view the TV you will be looking upward, so it will probably be more comfortable to sit as far from the TV as is practical. Once you have figured that out, then you can place the remaining furniture pieces.

I also suggest that you change out the ceiling light. A ceiling fan would look better. If you live in a cooler climate and don't wish to have a ceiling fan, a simple chandelier hung higher than .you would hang it over a table might be an alternative.

As for window coverings: you are on the right track with hanging draperies as high as possible. A simple pattern will work well with your furniture, but you do need to have a pattern of some sort because of the solid color furniture. Once you figure out the window coverings, you can choose some patterned pillows to pick up similar colors.
