What to do with this ridiculous access panel?

In our house, there's a plywood "access panel" for the plumbing in the back of a stall shower. The problem is that this panel doesn't stay secured; in fact, it's often open. It also doesn't sit well behind the base moulding. I hate this thing for aesthetic and safety reasons.

How can I replace this with something less intrusive (and better?) Given that the "panel" sits on the neighboring studs, I'm assuming that I'll have to cut out the drywall beyond that point so that I can fasten new drywall and patch it in, with a commercially-made panel in the middle. But is there a better way?
